Rutherford NJ, in a significant milestone for law enforcement leadership, John R. Russo, Chief of the Rutherford Police Department, has been sworn in as the 109th president of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. The ceremony took place during the association’s 112th annual training conference and Police/Security Expo in Atlantic City.

Leadership Transition

Chief Russo, a Bergen County native, will lead the association for a one-year term in this volunteer position while continuing his duties as Rutherford’s police chief. His leadership aims to amplify the voices of police chiefs in legislative matters, ensuring their perspectives are integral to discussions on proposed laws.

Legislative Advocacy

One of Chief Russo’s primary objectives is to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and legislators in Trenton. He emphasized the importance of fair and equitable laws that enhance public safety and support the effective performance of law enforcement duties.

“We need to vastly broaden our relationship with decision makers in Trenton to make sure that laws regarding public safety are fair, equitable and help law enforcement perform our duties at the highest levels,” said Russo, a Rutherford native who resides in neighboring Hasbrouck Heights.

A Unified Mission

Chief Russo advocates for a collaborative approach between legislators and law enforcement, highlighting the shared goal of protecting and serving the public. “Legislators and law enforcement need to be close partners in this endeavor, as we are all focused on the same objectives: protecting and serving the public,” he stated.

Addressing Crime and Public Safety

Earlier this year, on March 7, Chief Russo appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss pressing crime issues, such as car theft. He voiced concerns about the state’s “over-tolerance” towards repeat quality-of-life offenses, stressing the need for stricter measures to curb such crimes.
