HACKENSACK NJ,  Sheriff Anthony Cureton would like to make the public aware of an ongoing phone scam where perpetrators are pretending to impersonate personnel from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office. The scam attempts to extort money in the form of wire transfer, cash, and prepaid gift cards from potential victims, threatening them with arrest for “failing to report to jury duty” or “failing to appear for an outstanding summons.”

Sheriff Anthony Cureton would like to remind all residents that “the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office along with all law enforcement agencies will never threaten arrest and demand payment via telephone. If you receive a call of this nature, hang-up immediately.”

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office also advises residents to never give personal information including your credit card number or bank account information to an unsolicited caller.

Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to this or a similar type fraud is asked to contact either the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office at 201-646-2222, text your tip to 274637 (CRIMES), or to contact your local police department.
