Bogota NJ, a police investigation is underway in Bogota, NJ, after an officer discharged a firearm during a confrontation with an aggressive dog. The incident followed a reported animal attack on a local teenager earlier that afternoon.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office (BCPO) is leading the inquiry into the use of force, which occurred on February 13, 2026.
The Incident: From Palisades Avenue to Chestnut Street
The sequence of events began around 2:30 p.m. when Bogota police officers responded to a 911 call near Palisades Avenue and Linwood Avenue. Reports indicated that a dog had bitten a 17-year-old girl.
While the teenager received immediate medical attention, officers tracked the animal to nearby Chestnut Street. According to a statement from the BCPO:
“As an officer approached the animal, the dog lunged, and the officer fired his weapon.”
Status of the Victim, Officer, and Animal
Following the encounter, emergency services managed the scene involving three parties:

The Teenager: Treated for bite injuries and subsequently released to her family.

The Police Officer: Transported to Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck for evaluation following the high-stress encounter.

The Dog: Officials confirmed the dog survived the shooting, though its current condition and location have not been publicly disclosed.
BCPO and Attorney General Oversight
Per New Jersey protocol regarding police-involved shootings, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office was notified immediately. The AG has designated the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office to spearhead the ongoing investigation.
As of Monday, authorities have not released further details regarding the breed of the dog or potential charges for the owner.
