  1. Seriously, does this woman actually expect someone from RIDGEWOOD to admit that they are struggling financially? Never happen.

  2. Can’t wait to see this show. Struggling financially in Ridgewood? Really? Is it possible?

Can’t pay your country club dues? Porsche needs to be detailed but short on cash? Kids tuition to Delbarton is due but short on cash?

    Give me a break.

  3. Man bites dog story…but stranger things have been discovered and revealed.

  4. this should be fun

  5. Despite Ridgewood’s reputation as being a bunch of wealthy suburbanites, it might shock some people to know that there’s quite a few families that aren’t doing that great. Quite a few still have never recovered from the 2008 crash, and are managing to keep up appearances by combinations of living off savings, selling assets, help from aging parents (call it an advance on inheritance), switching kids from private to public school, staycations, eliminating kids summer camps, etc.

  6. I agree. There are families in Ridgewood struggling financially. But Ridgewood has always been, and will continue to be, a community whose residents are heavily focused on image. Appearances must be kept up at all costs. No one will admit to being in need.

  7. This place is full of phonies.
    Leased high end cars.
    Big big mortgages .
It’s part of the image for 10 years or so while the kids go to school here.
Then the for sale sign goes up and they
Move back to a rented apartment in NYC.
Unfortunately we have become a village of transient temporary residents,

  8. 6:39p, not that I necessarily disagree with you, but are you new to Ridgewood or considering moving out? Certainly you don’t mean to suggest that all village residents are phonies.

  9. I have lived here for 28 years. The for sale sign is going up because I no longer want to pay the taxes and – there are many wonderful places to live. Once the kids are out of school we are set free!

It is the circle of life.

  10. 735, no I am not new to ridgewood . I’ve been here since 1966 , when it was a different respectful group of people who lived within their means and were not all about “show”. We knew who had money, and they never showed it. Now it’s those who don’t have it and pretend to, not unlike a reality tv show. We were taught that if you can’t afford something, you don’t buy it until you save enough to pay for it…in fulll. Probably a generational difference from those who borrow to pay for everything that they really cannot afford. 5 percent down mortgages crashed this economy a few years ago and it has not fully recovered. I’d like an estate in saddle river but can’t afford a 5m home so I live where I can afford =ridgewood .

  11. There are a number of families having difficulties around here for a variety of reasons. The other good thing is that where there are empty houses, at least they are maintained with lights on. If this guy can really help, fine. Hopefully it’s not the usual exploitation crap on TV.

  12. Thx 7:36a. I moved to Ridgewood around the same time as you did. Don’t have the same sense of a sharp cultural contrast between then and now (at least not when you factor in how life in the US, including family life, has changed generally) but I have learned not to rely solely on my own judgment on such things. Perhaps I am in denial, and important aspects of life in town have changed for the worse, as you suggest. No sense living one’s life in a Pollyannish fog. OTOH, I don’t exactly feel like a stranger in town. Maybe it possible there are multiple ‘zeitgeists’ existing in parallel. Is the town big enough for that to be the case?
