>Kathleen A. Donovan : There have been confusing news reports inaccurately linking my pension status

There have been confusing news reports inaccurately linking my pension status with retirement issues involving other public employees and elected officials. Unfortunately, New Jersey’s complicated public employee retirement/pension system contributes significantly to the confusion which leads to inaccurate stories which raise unnecessary concerns.

So that you know the real, accurate story, I have taken the liberty of providing answers to questions you may be asking. If you have any additional question not addressed below, please let me know and I will respond directly.

Regards,

Kathleen A. Donovan

———————————————————————————

Q. Are you retired?

A. No. I retired as County Clerk last year when I was elected County Executive. This was required as I could not and would not hold two elected positions at the same time.

Q. Why did you take your pension?

A. I had to under State law. When I retired as County Clerk I could no longer be included in the Public Employment Retirement System (PERS). I was in effect “kicked out.” My options were limited. I could take my pension or leave my money in limbo and collect it at a future date. What would you do? Probably exactly what I did: take it.

Q. Would your pension have been at risk if you had left it with the state?

A. Quite possibly. It’s farfetched but the state’s pension plan is underfunded by some $55 billion. Would you risk your money if you didn’t have to?

Q. Could you have taken your pension earlier?

A. Yes. Under New Jersey State law I could have retired after 25 years of service (in 2007). I chose not to. I only took my pension when I had no other viable option.

Q. Are you getting a new pension as County Executive?

A. No. Neither the taxpayers nor I contribute to my pension any longer. It’s one and done and I’m done. No new pension.

Q. Is this compensation?

A. No. My compensation as County Executive is $134,000 (actually less than I earned as County Clerk). I do not receive additional pension benefits because I have taken my pension as provided by law.

Q. Are you taking advantage of a loophole?

A. No. This is not a loophole. This is totally consistent with State law.

Q. Are you “double dipping”?

A. No. I get my paycheck but no additional pension benefit.

A pension is not compensation. Its money put away for retirement. I do pay taxes on my pension as it is now personal income to me. But I get it whether I work or not. It’s not pay. It’s pension.

Thanks for your interest. Again, if you have any other questions please e-mail me at:

>Solar Power : How do we stop these ugly solar panels from being mounted on every utility pole that gets sunlight?

How do we stop these ugly solar panels from being mounted on every utility pole that gets sunlight? Solar is a great idea. Placing the panels on rooftops and in parking lots is a wonderful idea. Placing them as proposed on poles is a bad idea because:

1. The infrastructure (wires, connections and gathering points) are inefficient for such small panels.
2. The appearance of these panels changes the Village “cityscape” in an ugly way.
3. PSE&G has the rights to these poles to transmit power, not to generate power. If they want to install 500 solar power stations around town, they should seek permission.

Seeking non oil based energy is a worthy project that should be addressed in a serious manner. The PSE&G approach is neither serious or appropriate. The Village Council should stop these instalations and go to court if necessar

>Who is "The Ridgewood Environmental Advisory Committee (REAC)" ?

>”The Ridgewood Environmental Advisory Committee (REAC)”

Do these guys get ANY funding?

Exactly how much influence do they have on Village Policy?

Exactly what are their qualifications (do any of them have anything more than “an interest in environmental issues”?

“The Ridgewood Environmental Advisory Committee (REAC) is an independent volunteer committee,
appointed by the Village Council, with experience and/or interest in environmental issues. REAC advises
the Village Council on environmental, health and human safety issues in Ridgewood. It also seeks to
assist the residents of Ridgewood in addressing environmental concerns by advocating “best practices”,
which protect the environment, respect the ecosystem and promote sustainability.”

>Ridgewood, based bagel chain Wide World of Bagels opens shop in Mystic Ct.

>Ridgewood, based bagel chain Wide World of Bagels opens shop in Mystic Ct.

By Ian Holliday

MYSTIC — New England – particularly Eastern New England – is notorious for having a doughnut shop on every street-corner, often literally. The stiff competition in this region was part of the reason Tim Hortons decided to shutter all of its Rhode Island and Connecticut stores last November.

But though the market for doughnuts in this area was cornered long ago, Elliot Cohen believes there’s an opportunity in Mystic for another doughy, circular food: the bagel.

This summer, Cohen and business partner Scott Handler will open a location of their Ridgewood, N.J.-based bagel chain Wide World of Bagels at the former site of Tim Hortons on East Main Street.

“We’re really excited about equipping it and opening it up,” Handler said.
Cohen, who spends three days each week in a condominium in downtown Mystic, said he began inquiring about the vacant building the day after Tim Hortons closed it. He contacted the town of Stonington to find out who owned the building and ended up working with the owner and Tim Hortons to transfer the lease from the departing chain to him.

>Use of "Dads Night " list called a disgrace

>Use of “Dads Night ” list called a disgrace

This is a disgrace. The email used was the yahoo group email for all dadsnight members which includes parents (both dads and moms) from Hawes and Somerville along with dads night alumni to include parents (dads and moms) at BFMS, RHS and those who have no kids left in the district. The individual who sent this email should apologize immediately and retract the inappropriate endorsement. Everyone should support the retraction regardless of who they support as this is such a violation of trust and a misuse of the group email.

This is a parent group using taxpayer facilities for fundraising events. If the Dads Night organization, which I have been a member for years, chooses to be a political arm they must be prohibited from using any public schools for fundraising events.

If this fella is actually and attorney he should be disbarred for stupidity.

>BOE Elections: After speaking to Krauss at length I plan on voting for her.

>BOE Elections: After speaking to Krauss at length I plan on voting for her.

After speaking to Krauss at length I plan on voting for her. My other choice will have to be Sheila even though I think she has been there too long it seems there is no much of a choice when it boils down to the lesser of two evils.

Goodman has no regard for neighbors! She inflicted that duck pond dog park on everyone without consideration to anyone. The eyesore, noise , stench and crap everywhere is a disgrace. People from all over bringing their dogs. Now the plan is to move that eyesore closer to the road out of concern for the neighbors. Great! Now Ridgewood will greet visitors with a chain link fiasco perpetrated by Goodman. Can it be moved to her backyard?

Then the issue of the lights which Goodman voted on as BOE Liaison to Fields and now, as candidate in the hot seat she back peddles to mitigate her responsibility in the illuminating fiasco.

from the patch; ‘Laurie Goodman, who had voted in favor of the proposed (light) revision as liaison, said it was difficult as “much has to be left to the imagination.”

what part was left to the imagination? can the taxpayers of ridgewood take this candidate seriously? short answer is no.

>BOE Elections : Are we now requiring a litmus test for our BOE elected officials

I too am a concerned citizen of this town and I am concerned that the CCR would endorse a candidate for the BOE. Are we now requiring a litmus test for our BOE elected officials? This is an endorsement that does not speak to the needs of our children but just to someone’s anti-Valley stand.

How very sad…As far as I am aware, neither Sheila nor Laurie has taken a pro or anti Valley stand and this is how it should be when you are running for the BOE. The CCR may be correct on their Valley position but they are turning this town into a one issue community. Stridency is never good particularly when it comes to an issue as important and complex as the BOE and the education of our children. In fact 9:17 PM, Sheila has taken a strong stand on the safety of our children and construction requirements IF it comes to that. The CCR has really done a disservice to this community.

>REPORT SUMMARIZES JANUARY COMMUNITY PLANNING PROCESS

>REPORT SUMMARIZES JANUARY COMMUNITY PLANNING PROCESS

At the Board meeting on Monday, February 28, Ms. Nancy Stern, of Sousa & Stern Educational Consultants LLC, provided an update on the Community Planning process that was conducted in January. A packet that includes suggested goal statements and strategies was presented to the Board. The packet is considered to be a living document that can be revised as goals and strategies evolve. The next step in the Community Planning process is for the administration to create Action Plans, based on the suggestions and ideas that resulted from the January workshop. Pertinent summaries of the goal statements and strategies from the January workshop can be found on the Board page of the District website, under Board Goals. >Walker notifies unions of layoffs, but gives Democrats 15 days to reverse move

>Walker notifies unions of layoffs, but gives Democrats 15 days to reverse move
By Patrick Marley and Jason Stein of the Journal Sentinel

Madison — Gov. Scott Walker notified unions Friday of impending layoffs if a budget-repair bill isn’t passed in the next 15 days, even as both Republicans and Democrats showed signs of moving from their entrenched positions as they try to break a stalemate that has lasted nearly three weeks.

Walker warned Thursday that he would issue the notices on Friday that would affect up to 1,500 state employees. The actual notices, however, did not spell out how many people could be laid off, and a spokesman for the governor said the layoffs could be reduced by employee retirements.
