John Kerry says Americans ‘have a right to be stupid’

John Kerry says Americans ‘have a right to be stupid’ and tells how he lost his diplomatic passport at age 12 after sneaking out to Soviet-controlled East Berlin in 1950s

‘In America, you have a right to be stupid, if you want to be… and we tolerate that,’ Kerry said to a packed Internet cafe in Berlin
Kerry stopped in Berlin as part of his nine-country trip abroad – his first trip as secretary of state
He recalled how he learned about the divide in postwar Berlin as a young man living with his American diplomat father

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry recalled for young Germans Tuesday when he snuck out of the American embassy in divided postwar Berlin at age 12 for a clandestine bicycle ride into the Soviet-controlled eastern part of the city.

Kerry told the story to a group of young people in a packed Internet cafe in Berlin as he defended U.S. freedom of speech laws, saying that ‘In America, you have a right to be stupid.’

‘As a 12-year-old, I saw the difference between the east and the west,’ said Kerry, who had lived in Berlin in 1950s with his family and American diplomat father. ‘I saw people were in darker clothing and there were fewer people in the street. There were fewer cars. I didn’t feel the movement and the energy that existed elsewhere.’

A bit Late : Wall Street warns Christie to avoid election-year budget moves
By Salvador Rizzo/The Star-Ledger
on February 24, 2013 at 12:10 PM, updated February 24, 2013 at 6:08 PM

Editors Note : We had to laugh when we saw this article , its funny Wall Street never seemed to warn James Florio , Christine Todd Whitman, Jim McGreevey, and Jon Corzine for getting us into this mess . Nor have they warned about all the irresponsible  spending and behavior in New Jersey’s Assemble and Senate .  So where have the Wall Street wizards been the last 30 years?

TRENTON — When Gov. Chris Christie rolls out his new budget on Tuesday, Wall Street will be watching closely — and is warning that any false moves or election-year gimmicks could trigger more downgrades of New Jersey’s credit rating.

Analysts at Fitch Ratings, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s have all recently drawn their lines in the sand, telling the governor to steer clear of budgeting tricks that would lower costs in the short term by kicking the can down the road.

For example, skimping on the state’s pension contribution — which is set to rise from $1.1 billion in the current budget year to nearly $1.7 billion in the next — would upset all three agencies and could set off downgrades, the agencies say.

So would borrowing more money, relying heavily on one-shot sources of revenue, and failing to close a budget shortfall that reached $473 million at the end of January, among other concerns.

“What we’re looking for is a really strong economic rebound, combined with efforts at the state level to achieve a structurally balanced budget,” said John Sugden, an S&P credit analyst.

A Simple and Wrong Answer to Poverty: Increasing the Minimum Wage

A Simple and Wrong Answer to Poverty: Increasing the Minimum Wage
James Sherk
February 13, 2013 at 5:45 pm

During last night’s State of the Union address, President Obama proposed fighting poverty by raising the minimum wage. It sounds appealing but it will not work.

Labor economists have repeatedly studied the effects of minimum wage increases. They find no correlation between higher minimum wages and lower poverty. Raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour as the President suggests simply would not reduce poverty.

This seems counterintuitive, to put it mildly. Surely low-income families would benefit from higher pay. Why wouldn’t it help? For several reasons.

First, relatively few minimum wage workers are poor. The average minimum wage worker lives in a family making over $50,000 a year. Many minimum wage workers are teenagers or college students working part time—they are not trying to support themselves (or a family) with their income. Only one-ninth of the workers who would potentially benefit live in poverty. Raising the minimum wage will not affect many poor families.

Al-Qaeda’s offers 22 tips for dodging drones

Al-Qaeda’s offers 22 tips for dodging drones

Al-Qaeda’s list of 22 tips for dodging drone attacks – including at least one believed to originate with Osama bin Laden – has been found hidden inside a manila envelope in a building abandoned by Islamists in Mali.

The document includes advice such as “hide under thick trees” (believed to be bin Laden’s contribution), and instructions for setting up a “fake gathering” using dolls to “mislead the enemy”.

Found by the Associated Press in a building in Timbuktu, the ancient city occupied by Islamists last year, the document is believed to have been abandoned as extremists fled a French military intervention last month. It is a Xeroxed copy of a tipsheet authored by a Yemeni extremist that has been published on some jihadi forums, but that has made little appearance in English.

The list reflects how al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghbreb anticipated a military intervention that would make use of drones, as the war on terror shifts from the ground to the air.

As Expected Study says housing complexes would ease village traffic

RIDGEWOOD — A study commissioned by the village shows that four high-density, multifamily housing complexes proposed for downtown could alleviate traffic congestion and improve pedestrian safety.

A major concern for residents opposed to the developments is that they would bring more traffic to an already congested village.

But a traffic planner hired by Ridgewood disagrees.

John Jahr of Maser Consulting last week presented his findings from a traffic study focused on Ridgewood Station — a 114-unit luxury apartment and retail complex at the former Ken Smith Motors dealership.

“Three developers have come before us,” Jahr said. “All have generated traffic impact studies and they have all kindly understood these developments will have an impact on traffic. Ridgewood already has a significant traffic situation.”

Saying the village was a “victim of its own success,” Jahr said that Ridgewood has “over-capacity issues with traffic.” However, he noted the “developers have indicated that they will mitigate [their projects’] impact on traffic.”

Another meeting of the Sports and Exposition Authority board meeting took place Thursday without action being taken on the long-delayed American Dream Meadowlands.

But the entertainment and retail project that sits uncompleted at the Meadowlands Sports Complex nevertheless reached a milestone this week.

Tuesday was the 10th anniversary of the board’s selection of Meadowlands Xanadu — the previous name for American Dream — as its choice of a redevelopment plan for the land surrounding what was then known as Continental Arena.

With the project sitting idle and its unpopular multi-colored exterior remaining unchanged, the project has been the butt of Jersey jokes.

Ridgewood safety committee suggests conditions for proposed housing developments

The Ridgewood News

Concerned with four proposed housing developments for the Central Business District (CBD) area, the Citizens Safety Advisory Committee suggested to the Planning Board this week that developers agree to update the CBD’s current infrastructure issues as a “condition of their approval.”

According to the village’s traffic expert, John Jahr of Maser Consulting P.A., the developers have already agreed to improve aspects of the CBD’s current transportation infrastructure.

“They want to work together to improve the traffic conditions,” Jahr said. “They recognize they have an obligation.”

In a Feb. 5 letter addressed to Planning Board Chairman Charles Nalbantian, Councilwoman Bernie Walsh, the committee’s chairwoman, noted that in light of the proposals, several public safety concerns should be addressed in the CBD. The letter was read by Director of Public Works Chris Rutishauser, who is also a member of the Citizens Safety Advisory Committee, at Monday’s meeting.

Rising voice of gun ownership is female

Rising voice of gun ownership is female

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Mary Ann Froebe stood feet apart with knees slightly bent and aimed the .22-caliber Ruger semiautomatic.

“You’ve got some adrenaline running through you right now,” said Esther Beris, the coordinator of the northeastern Ohio chapter of A Girl and a Gun Women’s Shooting League. “It’s O.K., just relax.”

Ms. Froebe, 42, a small-business owner who described herself as a “virgin gun shooter,” concentrated and pulled the trigger. “It was awesome,” she said, her face flushed, after emptying the 10-round clip. “The sense of control, of being in charge of me.”
