>A Long, Steep Drop for Americans’ Standard of Living
>A Long, Steep Drop for Americans’ Standard of Living

Christian Science Monitor
Think life is not as good as it used to be, at least in terms of your wallet? You’d be right about that. The standard of living for Americans has fallen longer and more steeply over the past three years than at any time since the US government began recording it five decades ago.
Bottom line: The average individual now has $1,315 less in disposable income than he or she did three years ago at the onset of the Great Recession – even though the recession ended, technically speaking, in mid-2009. That means less money to spend at the spa or the movies, less for vacations, new carpeting for the house, or dinner at a restaurant.
In short, it means a less vibrant economy, with more Americans spending primarily on necessities. The diminished standard of living, moreover, is squeezing the middle class, whose restlessness and discontent are evident in grass-roots movements such as the tea party and “Occupy Wall Street” and who may take out their frustrations on incumbent politicians in next year’s election.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (CBS Cleveland) – An “Occupy Cleveland” protester tells police she was raped in her tent over the weekend.
Cleveland police are investigating an alleged sexual assault incident Saturday at the “Occupy Cleveland” rally involving a 19-year-old female student from Parma.
According to police reports, the 19-year-old student was instructed by “Occupy Cleveland” personnel to “share a tent with the suspect due to a shortage of tents.” The suspect identified himself as “Leland” to the woman. The woman told police that after she had thought the suspect went to sleep in his own bed, she slept in a sleeping bag provided to her by the rally.

Ten things to fix in Ridgewood
>Ten things to fix in Ridgewood (in no particular order):
1. Eliminate cross-walks…drivers don’t pay attention anayway so let’s end the charade.
2. Turn Graydon into a clear water pool.
3. Put lights somewhere on the west side….preferably at Willard.
4. Eliminate the Shade Tree Comm-n….having to replace my sidewalks every 8 years for stupid Oak trees planted by the town is insulting.
5. Have the Council vote on what “authors” can actually have book signings at Bookends.
6. Make Ridgewood and Franklin Avenues 1-way thoroughfares (in the CBD).
7. Move the BoE election to November.
8. Pave Grove Street so it doesn’t look like a highway in Bangalore.
9. Open up a Van Dykes on Pleasant Ave.
10. Have Policeman or an aux cop direct pedestrians when they come out of the train station…..

>5 reasons why income inequality is a myth — and Occupy Wall Street is wrong
>5 reasons why income inequality is a myth — and Occupy Wall Street is wrong

Sorry, the story just doesn’t hold together. According to left-wing think tanks, columnist and bloggers—and, of course, the Occupy Wall Street radicals—the top 1 percent have been exploiting the 99 percent for decades. The rich have been getting richer at the expense of the middle class and poor.
Really? Just think for a second: If inequality had really exploded during the past 30 to 40 years, why did American politics simultaneously move rightward toward a greater embrace of free-market capitalism? Shouldn’t just the opposite have happened as beleaguered workers united and demanded a vastly expanded social safety net and sharply higher taxes on the rich? What happened to presidents Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry? Even Barack Obama ran for president as a market friendly, third-way technocrat.
Nope, the story doesn’t hold together because the financial facts don’t support it. And here’s why:

Study: ABC, CBS and NBC loaded their broadcasts with 33 full stories in just 11 days of coverage of the Occupy Wall Street protests.
By: Geoffrey Dicken
The Occupy Wall Street protestors have received overwhelmingly positive coverage from the Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) news networks, as they used their airtime to publicize and promote the aggressively leftist movement. In just the first eleven days of October, ABC, CBS and NBC flooded their morning and evening newscasts with a whopping 33 full stories or interview segments on the protesters. This was a far cry from the greeting the Tea Party received from the Big Three as that conservative protest movement was initially ignored (only 13 total stories in all of 2009) and then reviled.
Where the Tea Party was met with skeptical claims of their motivations — with some reporters claiming they were merely corporate backed puppets and others implying they were spurred on by their racist opposition to the first black president – the Occupy Wall Street crowd was depicted as an almost genial “grassroots” movement.

>Down Town Ridgewood : Make the Central Business District a Pedestrian area
Get the cars out, make it walking only, increase the outdoor seating for coffe shops and restaurants, attract more retail business and divert the traffic to alternative routes. Create a smart parking solution – not on the main road.
Why are there so many cars driving up and down this street anyway?
Do we really need to use this route to get somewhere or can we just shut it down and make it nice and attractive?
I have seen it in other villages and of course a lot of yelling in the beginning but afterwards everybody likes it and business was coming back too.
I know, wishfull thinking and americas beloved automobile will win over any kind of thought outside the box – Sad and true!

“No Money" : Habernickel was bought, many other projects undertaken, and money was found for those – and still seems to be found- even for retroactive raises
>“No Money” : Habernickel was bought, many other projects undertaken, and money was found for those – and still seems to be found- even for retroactive raises
One person we know of who was badly affected by the non-connected storm drains asked the Village to fix that for many years, and sadly he died still waiting for the problem to be resolved. It still is unresolved.
Many times his family’s property was damaged. Many times he requested the Village take care of the problem – and was told over and again “no money” and that they would get to it when there was money available. This pre-dates fields, turf and Habernickel.
Other people we know have asked that very worn curbs be fixed for years and received the same answer.
And on our street, Village planted trees many years ago and then refused to care for them when they uprooted walks and driveways, saying they’d retroactively changed the law and the trees now are yours- but you must get permission if you want to cut them down.
If you read elsewhere on this blog too, you’ll see that recently a new proposal to give more Village trees to homeowners was made though tabled (for now). And also that the Mgr just announced a discharge fee would be applied to some homes.
Many streets are also in bad shape and need repairs around the Village.
It wasn’t as much about sewer connections as these other things, though years ago the Village didn’t charge you for the under-the-street part if that failed, either- as other posters have noted. You were not responsible to pay for the part under the street, just under your own property. If you have to dig up the street, many fees and charges apply and there is a big and expensive process involved.
In the interim though, Habernickel was bought, many other projects undertaken, and money was found for those – and still seems to be found- even for retroactive raises.
But apparently not for all the other stuff – that’s the issue- why not?

>Valley Renewal : Having these special meetings allows more citizens the opportunity to witness this phase of the process and offer input they were denied in the Planning Board phase
As far as the current Village Council meetings are concerned, Yes, experts did presentations to the Planning Board. And the Planning Board made it’s decision.
The next phase of the process is for the issue to come before the Village Council, who also will hear from experts and have a chance to question them before deciding whether or not to introduce an ordinance in support of the Planning Board’s decision. They have graciously responded to amount of public interest in this issue which is particularly important since the Planning Board did everything they could to disrespect and disregard the citizens of Ridgewood. Having these special meetings allows more citizens the opportunity to witness this phase of the process and offer input they were denied in the Planning Board phase.
The time the Village Council is spending on this is part of the process by which changes like this are decided. The meetings are a necessity either way. The fact that they have made them more easily accessible to the public is commendable.
