Washington Twp NJ, Washington Township Police and Washington Township Fire Department personnel responded to utility emergency involving a downed tree onto high tension electric lines and communications cables in the 700 block of Wearimus Road, Washington Township on Monday afternoon, 08/13. The fallen tree completely blocked the heavily traveled roadway necessitating detours be put into place by Hillsdale Police, Ho-Ho-Kus Police, and Washington Township Police. No injuries were reported in the incident, but many electric & communications services subscribers in the area were negatively impacted.
Mahwah NJ, On July 11th, Mahwah Township Clerk Kathy Coviello, who serves as the Recall Election Official, notified the Recall Committee and Mayor Laforet that verification of the Recall Petition was complete and there were sufficient valid signatures to proceed to the next step in the process.
On July 25th, the mayor filed an objection to the Recall with Ms. Coviello.Yesterday, August 6th, Ms. Coviello responded to the mayor’s objections. In short, Ms. Coviello stands by her prior determination that the Recall Petition is compliant with statutory requirements and has the necessary number of signers.
If the mayor chooses to challenge the determination of the Recall Election Official, he has 10 days to file for relief in New Jersey Superior Court.
Wyckoff NJ, A 4-door BMW sedan crashed through the front wall of a home on Harding Road, Wyckoff early Wednesday afternoon, 08/08, and became completely wedged in a first floor room of the structure. Wyckoff Police, Wyckoff Fire Department, and Wyckoff EMS responded to the scene. A flatbed tow truck winched the vehicle out of the structure and up onto the truck’s tow bed. At least one (1) person was reported to have been injured in the crash; no word from police at the scene as to whether the injured party was an occupant of the vehicle involved, or an occupant of the home. A representative from the Township of Wyckoff’s Building Department was also on scene.
Paramus NJ, Paramus Police, Paramus Fire Department , and Paramus Rescue Squad personnel responded to a structural collapse at a single family home located in the 300 block of Hickory Avenue on Wednesday morning, 08/08. A neighbor called 911 to report that the roof of an attached garage had collapsed into the structure. No injuries were reported in the incident. A sub code official from the Borough of Paramus’ Building Department was summoned to evaluate the home’s suitability for continued occupancy.

River Edge NJ, the Bergen County Historical Society :School of Interpretation & Volunteer Meeting will be Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at The Demarest House Museum.
A typical house of Bergen County in the early days of the Republic, the Demarest House provided a snug home to several families and even an artists’ club before being moved to New Bridge Landing in the 1950s. Historian and educator Peter Prato explores the history, architecture, and unique artifacts of the house in August’s School of Interpretation, a valuable and informative session for our new and veteran event volunteers.
For anyone interested in becoming a member and volunteering at Historic New Bridge Landing events as a docent, greeter, operations personnel, or living-history interpreter in period dress, the Bergen County Historical Society sponsors the School of Historical Interpretation to hone communication skills, familiarize volunteers with Bergen’s unique history, provide insight into the material culture of the past, and train volunteers in historical presentation.
Glen Rock NJ, Members of Glen Rock Fire Department extinguished a small dumpster fire at 50 Chadwick Place, Glen Rock on Tuesday afternoon, 08/07. No injuries were reported. Glen Rock Police also responded.
Cresskill NJ, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of TINA MADISON (DOB: 01/02/1962; married; unemployed) of 24 Poplar Street, Cresskill, NJ on Theft By Deception, Forgery, Records Tampering, and Money Laundering charges. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti.
In July 2018, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit received a complaint that Tina MADISON was suspected of forging and cashing checks from the account of her Bergen County-based employer.
An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit revealed that between 2010 and July of 2018, Tina MADISON, who was working as an administrative assistant at a Bergen County business, had gained access to her employer’s checking account and written checks which she negotiated for her own benefit. Tina MADISON forged the writing, signatures, and endorsements on the checks. To negotiate the checks, she either cashed them with a forged endorsement or deposited them into her own business bank account from which she withdrew cash. To conceal the theft, MADISON altered the victim’s bank statements which she would then file for record keeping purposes. The total theft by Tina MADISON was in excess of $1,000,000.
Tina MADISON was arrested on August 3, 2018 in Cresskill, NJ and charged with one count of Financial Facilitation Of Criminal Activity, with the amount involved being greater than $500,000, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-25b(2)(a), a crime of the 1st degree; one count of Theft By Deception, with the amount involved being greater than $75,000, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:20-4, a crime of the 2nd degree; one count of Forgery Of A Check, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-1a(2), a crime of the 3rd degree; and one count of Falsifying Or Tampering With Records, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-4a, a crime of the 4th degree. Tina MADISON is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, NJ on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.Acting Prosecutor Calo states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Fair Lawn NJ, according to the Fair Lawn Police department , on 7/13/18 at 4:32pm, Fair Lawn Police had responded to Columbia Bank, 25-00 Broadway, on a reported bank robbery where a dark-skinned male had presented a note to a bank teller that stated “10K or You Die” while the robber grabbed his hip, making the teller believe that he was holding a weapon. The robber was last seen fleeing on foot from the bank with $10,000 in proceeds.
Det. Brian Rypkema & Det. Anthony Lugo continued the investigation and on 8/1/18, were able to identify and arrest Jose Cuevas, age 22 of Paterson, on East 28th Street in Paterson after observing him walking near his residence. A 27-inch machete was found on his person upon arrest. The proceeds from the robbery were not recovered.
Cuevas was charged with robbery, theft and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, then was sent to Bergen County Jail. His first appearance in Superior Court in Hackensack is scheduled for today (8/2/18).

Glen Rock NJ, The Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Department announced on Facebook Friday that the Glen Rock Volunteer Fire Department has been upgraded to an ISO Class 3. ISO ratings are on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best and 10 not meeting the minimum standards. ISO ratings affect the communities’ insurance rates, the better the ISO class the better the insurance rates are for the community.
Insurance Service Office (ISO) evaluates the community based on these four factors:
– Emergency communications, how well the fire department receives and dispatches fire alarms.
– The fire department, including the amount of equipment available, maintenance and testing of equipment, type and extent of training, number of people who participated in training, and firefighter response to emergencies.
– Water supply, capacity for fire suppression beyond daily consumption, hydrant inspections and flow testing, and number of fire hydrants no more than 1,000 feet from the representative locations.
-Community risk reduction, effective fire prevention practices.
Glen Rock NJ, Glen Rock Fire Department responded to a single family home on Austin Place, Glen Rock on Friday afternoon, 08/03 in response to a 911 telephone call reporting a tree falling through the lower roof of an occupied home. No injuries were reported in the incident, but the occupants of the home were asked to evacuate the structure. Glen Rock Police also responded, as did Hawthorne Fire Engine Company #4.
Englewood NJ, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrests of AASIM BOONE (DOB: 11/02/82; single; and unemployed) and CHARLENE YABUT (DOB: 12/10/1979; single; and employed as a registry clerk) of 198 Waldo Place, Englewood, New Jersey. The arrests are the result of a two-week investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 16, 2018, a task force initiated by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Squad arrested Aasim BOONE and charged him with multiple counts of burglary and he was remanded to the Bergen County Jail. Shortly thereafter, an investigation ensued into BOONE and his communications with Charlene YABUT asking her to contact a victim/witness and attempt to have her drop pending domestic violence charges.
On August 1, 2018, Charlene YABUT was arrested and charged with Hindering, N.J.S.A. 2C:29-3A(3) and Witness Tampering, N.J.S.A. 2C:28-5A(1). Aasim BOONE was charged with Witness Tampering, N.J.S.A. 2C:28-5A(1). They are scheduled for first appearances in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 1:30 p.m.

PALACIOS RIVAS, (DOB: 12/02/1992; Single; and employed as restaurant food runner) of 32 West Prospect Street, Waldwick, New Jersey, on charges of Sexual Assault and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti and the Waldwick Police Department under the direction of Chief Mark Messner.
On Thursday, June 21, 2018, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit (“BCPOSVU”) received a report that Jose A. PALACIOS RIVAS, who was then twenty-years-old, had sexual intercourse on multiple occasions with a female who was under the age of sixteen. An investigation by the BCPOSVU and the Waldwick Police Department resulted in the arrest of PALACIOS RIVAS on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. PALACIOS RIVAS was charged with one count of Sexual Assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2C(4), a crime of the 2nd degree and one count of Endangering The Welfare Of A Child, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4(a), a crime of the 3rd degree. PALACIOS RIVAS is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 1:30 PM.

Maywood NJ, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of KEVIN J. NEWELL (DOB: 11/10/1962; married; salesman) of 94 East Pleasant Avenue, Maywood, New Jersey, a fugitive from justice based on multiple charges filed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, the Maywood Police Department under the direction of David Pegg, Homeland Security Investigations (“HSI”) – Pittsburgh Field Office, and the North Strabane (PA) Police Department.
On Tuesday, July 31, 2018, in connection with a months-long human trafficking and child sexual exploitation investigation initiated by HSI and the North Strabane Police Department, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Cyber Crimes Unit and special agents from HSI executed a search warrant at the residence of Kevin J. NEWELL. NEWELL was taken into custody and charged by Pennsylvania authorities with Trafficking In Individuals (PA 18 § 3011 §§ A1); Trafficking In Minors (PA 18 § 3011 §§ B); Unlawful Contact With A Minor – Sexual Offenses (PA 18 § 6318 §§ A1); Photograph/File/Depict On Computer Sex Act – Knowingly Or Permitting Child (PA 18 § 6312 §§ B1); and Criminal Use Of Communication Facility (PA 18 § 7512 §§ A). He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending extradition proceedings.

He served as Inspector General and a Major General of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He is credited with being one of the fathers of the Continental Army in teaching them the essentials of military drills, tactics, and disciplines. He wrote Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States, the book that served as the standard United States drill manual until the War of 1812. He served as General George Washington’s chief of staff in the final years of the war.

Baronfest, a day of music, beer, and food at Historic New Bridge Landing

Senator Gerry Cardinale and Assemblyman Robert Auth (both R-39) announced that Montvale Borough and Mahwah Township will receive $1.3 million in “Local Bridge, Future Needs” grants from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to undertake bridge reconstruction projects in the two municipalities.

“New Jersey must continue to make sound investments in our transportation infrastructure,” Sen. Gerry Cardinale said. “Families and commuters rely heavily on well-maintained bridges. Bridges and roads in Mahwah and Montvale, for example, are in desperate need of repairs. I am relieved to see that these communities will receive $1.3 million in grants, so that they can complete construction without burdening taxpayers.”
The Local Bridges, Future Needs grant program (LBFN) is funded through the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF), and will provided more than $47 million in funding to New Jersey’s 21 counties for county bridge improvement projects, including reconstruction plans in Montvale Borough and Mahwah Township.
The 2018 LBFN grants were based on a NJDOT formula that took into account the total bridge deck area in each county, as well as the portion of bridge infrastructure within each county that was rated in poor condition.
The projects funded in Legislative District 39, which encompasses parts of Bergen and Passaic Counties, include:
• Repairing the Ramapo Valley Road Culvert: $800,000
• Repairing the Magnolia Avebye Bridge: $500,000
“Investing in our public infrastructure, including our bridges, helps our local economy thrive,” Asm. Robert Auth said. “The $1.3 million in grants for projects in Montvale and Mahwah will keep our local roads safe, well-maintained, accessible for all of the residents, commuters, and hardworking business owners who use this infrastructure every day.”
