Summer solstice: Revellers flock to road in Manchester that lies on ancient solar pathway

A RESIDENTIAL street in south Manchester is set to be brimming with solstice revellers today after mapping experts have found it will point exactly in the direction of the sunset on the longest day of the year.

Experts say that a section of Claremont Road, Manchester, could have mystical energy after it was found it lie perfectly on an ancient solar pathway.

The street is in exact alignment with the midsummer sunset – just like the prehistoric landmark Stonehenge.

This means the road will be the perfect spot to admire the sun set on the longest day of the year.

A solstice-themed festival will be held in Alexandra Park this weekend, which borders with the road near Whalley Range to celebrate the height of summer.

The event, organised by Alexandra Wildlife Forum, will run a series of solstice-themed activities, including a crash course in mystical practise of water dousing, where sticks and rods are said to be able to detect underground water sources.

Last year mapping expert Dimi Sztanko created a guide to streets in cities around the world which align with the winter and summer solstice sunsets, which listed the south Manchester street.

Pope Francis pushes faith based “climate change”

How climate-change doubters lost a papal fight

By Anthony Faiola and Chris Mooney June 20 at 9:26 PM

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis was about to take a major step backing the science behind human-driven global warming, and Philippe de Larminat was determined to change his mind.

A French doubter who authored a book arguing that solar activity — not greenhouse gases — was driving global warming, de Larminat sought a spot at a climate summit in April sponsored by the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Nobel laureates would be there. So would U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, U.S. economist Jeffrey Sachs and others calling for dramatic steps to curb carbon emissions.

After securing a high-level meeting at the Vatican, he was told that, space permitting, he could join. He bought a plane ticket from Paris to Rome. But five days before the April 28 summit, de Larminat said, he received an e-mail saying there was no space left. It came after other scientists — as well as the powerful Vatican bureaucrat in charge of the academy — insisted he had no business being there.

“They did not want to hear an off note,” de Larminat said.

Congressmen Garrett Meets With Jewish Home Family’s Centennial Israel Mission

109

On Thursday, New Jersey Congressman Scott Garrett visited with the travelers who will be taking part in the Jewish Home Family’s Centennial Mission to Israel in October. There are 10 older adults participating on this 10-day mission and each has a “buddy,” who will be his or her roommate and traveling companion. The team has begun monthly meetings focused on preparing for their journey and learning more about Israel and what they are going to see and experience.

“I’ve been able to go to Israel three times in my life,” he told the group. “I’ve gone over as a member of Congress, with AIPAC and others. My trips over there have always been an eye-opening experience for me.”

Staff and residents were chosen to attend the mission after dozens of applications were reviewed. The application included an essay about why they wished to join the momentous mission.

After speaking a bit about his personal experiences in Israel, the Congressman took questions from members—many of whom have never been to Israel before. One asked whether he felt it was a safe time to visit.

“Even in the most troubling times over there we felt completely safe—even safer than we sometimes feel here at home,” the Congressman said.

The Centennial Mission is one of a series of special programs that celebrate and recognize the Jewish Home’s 100 years of service to this community. Jewish Home Family President and CEO, Carol Silver Elliott, says that this is the ideal year to take a mission to Israel. “Taking older adults to Israel is no small thing. It demonstrates our commitment to our elders and to believing that they can still learn, grow and achieve. We say that age is just a number and undertaking a mission like this proves it, demonstrating that you are never too old to have a dream and to have that dream become reality.”

Can gay marriage and religious freedom co-exist?

On Friday, an administrative law judge in Oregon recommended a $135,000 fine for the bakery company Sweet Cakes by Melissa.

The owners, Aaron and Melissa Klein, refused to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. They are Christians who do not believe in same-sex marriage.

The lesbian couple claimed they had justification for “damages” against the Kleins:

In their lawsuit, the two women claimed they felt “mentally raped,” as part of a list of 88 symptoms of emotional distress they experienced at being refused a cake.

The long list of symptoms included “acute loss of confidence,” “doubt,” “excessive sleep,” “felt mentally raped, dirty and shameful,” “high blood pressure,” “impaired digestion,” “loss of appetite,” “migraine headaches,” “pale and sick at home after work,” “resumption of smoking habit,” “shock,” “stunned,” “surprise,” “uncertainty,” “weight gain” and “worry.”

This comes in the wake of controversies over religious freedom legislation in Indiana and Arkansas. A more narrow measure that deals exclusively with marriage is under consideration in Louisiana. In all three states, gay rights groups strongly oppose these laws.

The question has to be asked: At this point can gay marriage co-exist with religious freedom?

More and more conservatives are coming out for gay marriage. The Supreme Court will likely rule in favor of same-sex marriage in all 50 states this summer. Polls show that an increasing majority of Americans favor same-sex marriage. The battle is all but over nationwide.

The real test for those who support freedom is whether they uphold it for people who are unpopular, such as opponents of same-sex marriage. In a free society, there should be protections for mom and pop wedding service providers who cannot in good conscience service same-sex weddings. Those businesses are an extension of their owners, who should not be asked to check their beliefs at the door.

Many orthodox Christian sects, among other religions, continue to view same-sex marriage as sacrilege. What right does the state have to force these people to think differently?

Pope at Easter prays for killed Kenyan students, decries Christian persecution

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – (In paragraph eight, corrects number of Egyptian Copts killed to 21, not 22)

Pope Francis prayed for an end to the persecution of Christians in his Easter Sunday address, commemorating the students massacred by Islamist militants at Garissa University in Kenya.

Francis, after saying Mass for thousands of people in a rainy St. Peter’s Square, delivered a mostly sombre and grim “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) message.

Attacks on Christians in Africa and the Middle East have been the grim backdrop of all Holy Week ceremonies leading up to Easter.

“We ask Jesus, the victor over death, to lighten the sufferings of our many brothers and sisters who are persecuted for his name, and of all those who suffer injustice as a result of ongoing conflicts and violence – and there are many,” he said.

The pope spoke as churches in Kenya, where al Shabaab gunmen massacred nearly 150 people, singling out Christians for point-blank executions, turned to armed guards to protect their congregations on the most important day of the Christian liturgical year.

Defrocked priest finds strength in new followers

THE RECORD

The Archdiocese of Newark is on the defensive in a dispute with a small but growing sect of Catholics over the defrocking of a former Bergen County priest who the church says “abandoned” the ministry, a term his defenders say was used to sow doubt about his conduct.

Anthony Lipari worked as a Roman Catholic priest for years in Bergenfield and Ridgewood parishes, and as a deacon in Dumont, becoming a popular youth minister with a loyal following. But in 2003, while he was an assistant priest in Nutley, he and a high-ranking archdiocese official agreed he should leave the church as his differences in theology became clear, Lipari said.

Lipari, 54, has just launched a ministry at the Jersey Shore, affiliated with a new, liberal sect of Catholics, and he, like some church experts, is questioning the announcement this month by Newark church leaders stripping him of the priesthood.

The defrocking has created new critics of Archbishop John J. Myers, who in recent years has faced a firestorm of publicity over his treatment of a sexually abusive Bergen County priest, and pushback from parents amid continuing school closings and an archdiocese takeover of education finances. Last year church donors mounted protests over revelations that Myers expanded a lavish countryside home for his retirement.

On Thursday, March 19, about 60 Catholics from North Jersey celebrated the Feast of St. Joseph with a high Mass at a church in Bergen County. The service began at 7:30 p.m. with a solemn procession, replete with flickering candles and incense, and ended 90 minutes later, with the priest shaking the hands of attendees — and requesting that neither his name nor the name of his church be revealed in this article.

Another Illustration That Tolerance Does Not Extend to Faithful Catholics

By: Msgr. Charles Pope

In another show of selective tolerance from the cultural radicals, there comes the following story, as related in Crisis Magazine. Here are some excerpts from the article:

In their zeal to protect students from any comments or opinions that may hurt their feelings, many professors [in this case at Marquette University] have created “safe spaces” in their classrooms—controlling all conversations in an effort to ensure that no one is ever offended …[Professor Cheryl Abbate]  made it clear that the classroom was not a [place for students doubting] the value of same-sex “marriage.” Such conversations had to be held in secret so as not to offend others … One student in the class decided to pursue this issue with Abbate after class … The student said: “I have to be completely honest with you, I don’t agree with gay marriage …”  Professor Abbate replied: “Ok, there are some opinions that are not appropriate, that are harmful.”

When the student replied: “If I choose to challenge this, it’s my right as an American citizen,” Abbate responded: “Well, actually you don’t have a right in this class … to make homophobic comments, racist comments, sexist comments … I can tell you right now, in this class homophobic comments, racist comments and sexist comments will not be tolerated. If you don’t like that you are more than free to drop this class.”

In the “safe space” Abbate has created, homosexual students have the right not to be offended … But, where does that leave faithful Catholic students? Is there a safe space for them? … For Abbate, it is uncontroversial to have a safe-space policy that is only safe for those who agree with her about the value of same-sex “marriage.”

In December, Marquette relieved Professor John McAdams of his teaching and other faculty duties for blogging about the Abbate incident. According to McAdams, the student involved in the confrontation with Abbate talked with him about the incident, and McAdams took to his blog, Marquette Warrior,  [N.B. Professor Abbate] had also written of the incident on her blog but was not disciplined for bringing the matter to light … [The full article is here: Crisis Magazine online: Catholicism is Considered Unsafe at Marquette]

Welcome to “tolerance” as defined by secular radicals. In their lexicon, “tolerance” is “your right, actually, your obligation to agree with me.” “Live and let live” means, “you have the right to live only where Isay and under the terms I set.” “Bigotry” applies only those speaking out against the classes they say are oppressed. “Phobes” (as in homophobes) are those who oppose their  agenda. “Hate” only exists against the classes they say are “protected” and that they have defined as “oppressed.” Apparently, it is not possible for religious or social conservatives to be the object of hate, since hate only comes from social conservatives. Or so it would seem from their behavior and policies. And very few will question them on this  due to the support of secular media and to the pressure to be politically correct.

Pope Benedict spoke frequently of the “tyranny of relativism.” Essentially, this means that when a culture decides there is no fundamental basis of truth (whether from Scripture or Natural Law), the result is that there is no real basis for discussion or resolution of issues. Thus, who “wins the day” is based not on reason but on who shouts the loudest and/or who has the most power, money, or political influence

Religious Freedom Meeting–Tuesday Feb 3, at 7:30 K of C Oakland

Tonight Tuesday, February 3, we will be having our monthly meeting.

There are several very good videos I have found on the subject of the suppression of religious speech and rights on college campuses put out by an organization called FIRE (Freedom for individual Rights in Education. They are hard-hitting, and so we’ll show them. If anybody can find any others, we can see them too.

As we discussed last meeting, we have sent out letters introducing ourselves to the other Protestant churches in Oakland. Now we are awaiting a response.

Hope to see everybody then. And bring a friend.
