RIDGEWOOD SCHOOLS : HOHOKUS BROOK BRIDGE UPDATE

Repairs to the HoHoKus brook bridge will begin on Monday, April 23, 2012. The objective of these repairs is to permanently stabilize the bridge and allow it to remain open for pedestrian traffic and limited vehicular traffic (not to exceed 4,000 pounds).

The time line to complete all work is from April 23 through April 30.  Although repair methods have not been finalized, it is very possible a crane will be on site to lift the bridge off the supports to facilitate repairs.  During the repair time line, the bridge will be closed to all traffic.

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD – Village officials are applying for federal grant money to offset the cost of a flood remediation project that would clean up the Hohokus Brook and possibly alleviate overflow issues.

The estimated cost of two of three phases of the project is $400,000 to $425,000, Mayor Keith Killion said.

“We’re applying for $325,000 in grants,” Killion said. “This is something the village wants to do to provide relief to residents [living in the flooded areas] of the brook.”

The money could come from the Department of Agriculture and would offset a plan to “de-snag” and “de-silt” the brook, Killion said. Tree stumps, fallen trees and debris would be removed from the brook from the north end of the village south to the border with Glen Rock. The plan would also rid the brook of sand islands and rocks in the winding waterway.

Work to begin on Ho-Ho-Kus Brook

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

On a clear, dry day, the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook, with its gentle and quiet southbound flow, may not seem like the sort of body of water likely to rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage. But subtle clues – chunks of concrete scattered across the waterbed, ravaged tree roots, imposing mounds of rock – hint at the greater power of the brook under less optimal weather conditions.

It is a power that residents and village officials are currently wrestling with, both in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene and looking ahead to flood events that seem to be increasing in frequency. With Ridgewood officials reporting substantial progress on obtaining resources necessary to remediate some of the brook’s problems, however, it looks like the current may be turning in the village’s favor.
