Reader Congratulats residents of HoHoKus for taking the lead and continuing to understand impact the runaway spending has on the quality of life

Congratulations to the residents of Hohokus for taking the lead and continuing to understand impact the runaway spending has on the quality of life within their town. School budgets and unending increases for the same are wreaking havoc on what has been a wonderful section of Bergen County to live in. Ironically the very things that towns used to tap out as being a reason to buy a home in the town has become the very reason to no longer want to stay in the town or buy a house in the town. We all support our teachers but it’s about time our teachers Now supported us and understood the damage full extent of the damage their Union and salaries are doing to the very Villages that pay them

Stop the disruption of History in Ridgewood

315 east glen avenue ridgewood nj

February 6,2018

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, a petition is circulating to Stop the disruption of History, Stop Developers from building 6800 sq ft homes within an already sub-divided flaglot. Planning Board meeting scheduled for 2/6/2018 at 730pm.

The historic 1830s Ridgewood home at 315 East Glen Avenue where I grew up is currently being threatened with destruction so that the current owner can replace it with two houses to sell on this large property! The house shares many original architectural and decorative details with the Hermitage and Hohokus Inn and has a fascinating history with residents including the actor Edwin Boothe, and it was reputed to have been a part of the Underground Railroad. Aside from the beauty, history and trees/landscaping that would be lost with the destruction of this home, the proposed variances create issues for the town and neighborhood (detailed in the petition.) These proposed variances will be discussed this Tuesday, Dec. 19th at 7:30 at Village Hall – if you do not want to see this historic home lost, please consider signing the petition below, forwarding it to friends and/or joining us at the Planning Board meeting on Tuesday!

Petition to Stop Destruction of Historic 1830s Ridgewood Home at 315 East Glen in Ridgewood

StopSign_081712_rn_tif_

December 18,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, an online petition is be circulated by Ridgewood residents looking to stop the over development of the Village . The planning board in the past has not excepted online petitions some residents hope to bring pressure and sanity to the process .

TIRED OF SUBDIVISIONS AND DEVELOPERS taking down our homes, clear cutting 16 trees, eliminating open space, reducing our property values but raising our taxes.
#JUSTSAYNO to this 250 year old street and 157 year old homes being torn down. Attend the next planning board meeting 12/19 and support your residents – or please help to sign the petition.

Stop Destruction of Historic 1830s Ridgewood Home at 315 East Glen!

To be delivered to Mayor Susan Knudsen, Ridgewood Mayor, Deputy Mayor Michael Sedon, Deputy Mayor, Councilman Ramon Hache, Councilman, Councilman Jeff Voigt, Councilman, Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh, Councilwoman and 8 other targets (click here to see more)

Please do not approve the variances that would allow the historic 1830s home at 315 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood to be destroyed and replaced with two new homes!
There are currently 54 signatures. NEW goal – We need 100 signatures!
 Petition Background
I grew up in the historic home at 315 East Glen Avenue, which was built in the early 1830s and shares many original architectural and decorative details with the Hermitage and Hohokus Inn (woodwork, moldings, floors, banisters, windows etc.) It has a fascinating history with residents including the actor Edwin Boothe, and was reputed to have been a part of the Underground Railroad. A woman named Miss Colie lived there during the Depression who was supposed to distribute flour and sugar as a part of the WPA program, but she ended up committing suicide in the garage when she was found to have stolen the supplies.
Aside from the beauty, history and trees/landscaping that would be lost forever with the destruction of this home, the variances requested create issues for the town and neighborhood including:
– non-conformance of buildable and usable square footage to other homes in the area
– water collection, drainage and flood prevention given the reduction of trees and grass due to additonal paving proposed and requirements for running of utility lines
– access and safety of additional cars from secondary home
– non-conformance of variances for a home to be set back and sideways
– non-conformance to expand pathway to 20 ft, (currently no examples in town)
Please join us in opposing the variances that would allow this home to be destroyed and help us to save this historic home for future generations to enjoy as a part of the varied architectural and historic tapestry that make up our community! Thank you for your support!!

Reader says Affordable housing can be beneficial to a handful of people but can be devastating to so many more

CBD high density housing

This affordability thing is one of the most perverted things I have come across.. How can an organization such as Fair Share housing have so much leverage in dictating their agenda. How can they play as they wish with the quality of life of so many towns, villages and people who have worked hard to make it where they are living now. Affordable housing can be beneficial to a handful of people but can be devastating to so many more. Yet there is no public outrage when they impose totally unrealistic numbers to nice towns without giving a sh!t in how people in these places feel about this. Local governments feel so powerless even though they represent the will of of local population. There are plenty of affordable places in NJ. Whoever can’t afford Ridgewood, HoHoKus, Montvale etc. can move to Paterson, Clifton etc. This has nothing to do with humanism, this is total abuse.

Ridgewood NJ, An adult male pedestrian dressed in a bright yellow jump suit with multiple bulging pockets asking for directions to the nearest school, aroused the suspicions of a Ridgewood resident living in the Willard Elementary School area on Wednesday afternoon, 10/18. Ridgewood PD received the resident’s 911 call shortly after 1:30 PM and sent multiple patrol units out looking for the individual. Police officers from HoHoKus and Midland Park joined in the hunt.

All Ridgewood Public Schools were placed in “lock down” condition during the search. 45 minutes after receipt of the 911 call, the party of interest was apprehended in front of 299 West Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, less than 1/2 block from the Ridge Elementary School. He was transported to Ridgewood PD for questioning. Criminal charges, if any, are pending.

Ridgewood Police report :This afternoon Ridgewood Schools were advised to shelter the students in place after a resident reported a man wearing what appeared to be a bullet proof vest asked for directions to Willard School. The person described by the resident was located by patrol a short time later wearing a black weighted vest which has the appearance of a bullet proof vest. All schools were cleared of the shelter in place at 2:15pm. This shelter in place was issued out of an abundance of caution to the school community.

Flood Plains In The Village Of Ridgewood

VillageHall_floods_theridgewoodblog

file photo by Boyd Loving

October 17,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The Village Of Ridgewood has a number of streams with a flood plain associated with it, Ho-Ho-Kus BrookSaddle RiverGoffle BrookDiamond Brook, and SproutBrook a nondelineated stream behind Gateway Road.

These streams are limited in capacity and tend to exceed there banks during heavy rain falls similiar to Tropical Storm Floyd on September 16, 1999 and Hurricane Irene on August 28, 2011 (both of which can be considered a 100 year flood event).  Additionally, the Nor’easter on April 15, 2007 can be considered a 20 year storm event.

As each storm event varies in duration and inches of rainfall, flow varies through each section of the stream dependant on flow restrictions ie, bridges, culverts, dams and weirs. Preventitive maintenance to keep these areas clear is the Village’s primary goal in keeping flooding to the minimum.

Flood information for the Village is available in the Engineering Division Office. Flood maps from FEMA and the New Jersey Department Of Environmental Protection are available. Documentation from FEMA is available stating the property and/or structure is located in the floodplain.

Flood Insurance

The Village of Ridgewood participates in the Community Rating System (CRS) and has a rating of Class 7, which is administered by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Because we participate in the CRS program, anyone in the Village of Ridgewood can purchase flood insurance. Please note that standard homeowner’s insurance does not cover damage from floods. Most homeowner’s who have paid off their homes do not continue the flood insurance as required by most mortgage companies. Here are some common Myths and Facts about the National Flood Insurance Program.

Reader says if employees are parking in spots for the general public, then we should eliminate the majority of the designated employee spots

Parking Walnut lot aside town garage employee spaces less than 33 perent used 330 pm weds feb 8 2017

… employees are parking in spots for the general public, then we should eliminate the majority of the designated employee spots in the lot behind Bookends.
The main function served by those spots now is ticket writing, since it is almost impossible to find a parking spot in that lot, or on any nearby street on many occasions.
The designation of expensive valet parking will reduce parking spaces for the general public, which in turn will reduce business downtown or result in more “illegal” parking and increased fine revenue and revenue for the valet company.
How does any of that serve the public interest in Ridgewood ? I now spend less time and money in Ridgewood than I did a few years ago, and that trend will continue. Parking has become more difficult in my 20+ years in Ridgewood. Glen Rock, HoHoKus, Waldwick, Wyckoff and other local towns have managed to avoid this degree of parking problem.

UPDATE : Water Main Replacement Project at Stream Crossings in the Village of Ridgewood

RidgewoodWaterLogo_theridgewoodblog
August 20,2017
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Water’s contractor, Fred Devens Construction, has begun site clearing and necessary road work in preparation for the water main replacements at each of the below stream crossings.  Unfortunately, tree/shrub removal is required at each of these locations to access specified work areas. We remain sensitive to the environment and landscaping will be restored. As construction work is scheduled to continue into the winter months, final restoration of trees/shrubs is planned for the Spring of 2018.

Linwood Ave. at the Saddle River
North Irving St. at the HoHoKus Brook
East Ridgewood Ave. at the HoHokus Brook
Spring Ave. at the Hohokus Brook

Fred Devens Construction will continue to coordinate with the Ridgewood Police Department for all traffic control measures as needed. We anticipate that there will be ongoing road closures and detours at these locations depending on the schedule of construction activities. The next phase of construction will be focused on the E. Ridgewood Ave. stream crossing, followed by the N. Irving stream crossing. For project updates, please check back on our website or like us on Facebook @RidgewoodWater.

July 22,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Water announced that the contract to upgrade infrastructure water piping at 4 stream locations has been awarded to Fred Devens Construction.  The project will be managed by Consulting Engineer, Mott MacDonald.

Construction activities will take place at Linwood Ave/Saddle River, North Irving St/HoHoKus Brook, East Ridgewood Ave/HoHokus Brook and Spring Ave/Hohokus Brook.  Work is scheduled to commence in July with a contract duration of 180 days for completion.

The work will include replacing the existing water mains in the streams and tying back into the existing water mains in the streets.  No interruption of service is expected for the residents during mainline construction. Brief interruptions of service may occur when transferring house services on an as needed basis.

Sequencing of the 4 locations will be completed in stages starting with mobilizing of equipment & materials, saw cutting of the roadways, valve installations, shoring of stream crossings, installation of casing pipe and placement of new water main pipes within the stream, piping up into roadways, chlorination & testing, tie-in to existing water system, transfer of water services, and final restoration of disturbed areas both in the roadway & landscaped areas.

Fred Devens Construction will be coordinating with the local police who will be directing traffic around work areas. Expected work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7am – 5:30pm, weather permitting.

Ridgewood Water appreciates the patience of our residents while performing this important work as part of our ongoing commitment in upgrading our water system.
