Ridgewood NJ, A Mahwah resident sustained non-life threatening injuries on Monday evening after losing control of her 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and hitting a utility pole in front of 555 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood.  Ridgewood PD, FD, and EMS all responded to the incident, which occurred shortly before 8:00 PM.  Although the utility pole was severly damaged and leaning heavily after the crash, no electric outages were reported in the area.  Ridgewood firefighters attended to a minor fluid spill resultant from the crash.  The Jeep was removed by flatbed tow truck just as a PSE&G trouble shooter arrived at the scene to assess damages.  As of 8:55 PM, North Maple Avenue between remains closed indefinitely in both directions between Pine and 2nd Streets due to the leaning utility pole.

Ridgewood NJ , Democratic challenger Adam Gussen deputy mayor of Teaneck tried Sunday to take advantage of his only face-to-face debate with incumbent Rep. Scott Garrett in voter-rich Bergen County by criticizing Garrett’s votes on economic and government social programs.

While Garrett focused his barbs mainly at President Obama and ignored the challenger, who is largely unknown in a redrawn 5th District and has struggled to raise money or gain any traction .

The debate was not carried on TV or radio, with only about 100 people or so in attendance , most were supporters of either candidate.

Gussen, who is the deputy mayor of Teaneck, tried in vain at one point to get Garrett to focus on the challenger in the room instead of Democrats in Washington: “I’m not President Obama, and there’s no empty chair for Clint Eastwood to talk to, either.”

Gussen is viewed as mostly as an “Obamabot” other than his doubts about the administration’s policy toward Iran, Gussen’s own positions mirrored those of Obama and other Democrats. Garrett is viewed as the quintessential conservative share many of the same positions as Mitt Romney .

While Garrett’s detractors continually attack him for being out of touch and far too “conservative” for left leaning Bergen county , voters disagree by voting Garrett in by landslides even in very “liberal” towns like Ridgewood.

Gussen while no gaff prone Joe Biden , he seems to be out of ideas other than the very tried , “evil Republics are all for rich people ” ,given by most standards Bergen county is full of those same “rich people” , who seem to vote Democrat , and love the president Obama .

Mahwah — The Township Council passed a resolution on Thursday, Dec. 15, that would eliminate health benefits for all elected officials beginning in 2013.

According to the resolution, elected officials who don’t receive benefits will no longer have the option to. However, the two council members who currently receive benefits — Lisa DiGiulio and John Spiech — will continue receiving them through the end of next year.

Six members of the council voted in favor of the resolution, with an abstention by Spiech, at around 12:30 a.m. after an executive session. Before the executive session, Council President John Roth had said the governing body would not reconvene afterward.

Mayor William Laforet had voiced the lone objection to the resolution, saying he wanted the council to eliminate health benefits for all elected officials immediately.

Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office : Rocco John Benedetto, 36, of Mahwah, is charged with vehicular homicide in the death of Dorothy Scordato, 80, of Allendale.

RIDGEWOOD — A Mahwah man has been charged with vehicular homicide in an accident that killed an 80-year-old woman Friday afternoon.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli, Rocco John Benedetto, 36, of Mahwah, was found to be intoxicated and under the influence of drugs when he caused a three-car accident that killed Dorothy Scordato, 80, of Allendale.

Investigators said Benedetto was traveling south on Route 17 in Ridgewood, near East Saddle River Road, just before 2 p.m. Friday when his 2009 Mercedes Benz struck Scordato’s 2005 Honda Element. Scordato lost control of her car, veered across several lanes and was ultimately struck by a 2008 Honda Civic driven by a New York woman, Molinelli said. The New Yorker was not charged.

Numerous 911 calls summoned Ridgewood police, who found Scordato badly injured behind the wheel of her car, Molinelli said. Scordato was taken to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, where she died of her injuries.

Molinelli said Benedetto drove on for another half mile before pulling off the highway and calling police. He is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.

Bail was set at $150,000.
