Reader says with 500-700 new units at a bare minimum, water and sewer services will need upgrades

At a bare minimum, water and sewer services in NJ will need upgrades. We have water restrictions every summer, so hard to imagine that problem goes away. There have been many articles in past year on need to upgrade sewers.

As noted, traffic will be a nightmare, particularly at the Broad st intersection (now proudly sporting a nice bike lane) despite the experts believing these people will walk everywhere they go.

Schools will have to be re-districted at minimum for elementary, and maybe middle school. I don’t know how close to capacity the HS is, but I suspect it’s close.

I think the “experts” projected some ridiculously small number of students, but I think we all know better.

The council needs to balance the costs of all of these upgrades with the benefit of the tax revenues the projects would generate. To a certain extent, it is likely an all or nothing proposition, as if they reject 1 and allow another, we’ll be in court fighting that, too.

Reader says Previous Reports make it obvious that the densities being proposed in ridgewood are too dense.

So Brancheau doesn’t consider the extensive report prepared by CBR’s attorneys to be adequate planning? CBR spent tens of thousands on hiring a well respected law firm which prepared a 25 page report comparing densities of the most desirable municipalities in Bergen, towns comparable to Ridgewood, which have maintained densities per acre in line with, or just slightly higher than Ridgewood’s current master plan which allows for 12 units per acre in the business district…This report analyzed regs of 72 municipalities in Bergen..a quick review of this report makes it obvious that the densities being proposed in ridgewood are too dense.

The board also heard testimony from and received an 18 page report from professional planner Brigitte Bogart…who was also hired by CBR..this report details how the proposed development/amendment to the master plan would affect our schools, traffic, open space deficiency, need for additional resources such as police, fire, etc.,…Bogart also discusses in detail how any proposed amendment to the master plan should be reviewed with respect to open space and recreational facitilites…

Doesn’t sound like poor planning to me…I hope the board is considering this evidence it has before them and acts responsibly. We will remember come election time..in 2016 and for years to come… whether or not they acted to protect and preserve Ridgewood.

Ridgewood plans to seek new CFO

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — The village will start the search for a new chief financial officer.

Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said officials have “decided not to renew Steve Sanzari’s contract as CFO.”

However, Sanzari will retain his position as the village’s treasurer, Sonenfeld said.

Ridgewood’s next CFO will also be responsible for overseeing the village’s Parking Authority, Sonenfeld added.

Sanzari will continue to earn a base salary of $110,197.61 as treasurer. He had received a $5,000 stipend as CFO — a post that will end Jan. 1. The village is open to negotiate the salary for the next CFO, Sonenfeld said.

The village manager appointed herself the Parking Authority’s head after first assuming the office last spring.

Civility in our public discourse or Silencing Dissent

Friends / Colleagues —

I am writing to invite you to a meeting to discuss the need for more civility in our public discourse.   The meeting will be Monday, November 24 at 7:30pm in Village Hall.

Specifically, we would like to begin a community-wide conversation about ways in which we can elevate public discourse and improve the way in which people publicly treat each other … whether it be at a Council meeting … on a ball field … in an online discussion … or anywhere else.

Joining me to lead this informal meeting will be Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck, Rev. Jan Philips and Rabbi David Fine.

Please let me know if you can join us and if you think someone else should be invited, too.   In fact, please share this invitation with those who you think should attend, but please keep me posted so that I can keep track of those planning to attend.

Thanks very much.

New Jersey loses jobs in October as it prepares for bond sale

New Jersey loses jobs in October as it prepares for bond sale
By By Hilary Russ | Reuters – 4 hours ago

(Reuters) – New Jersey’s economy showed more cracks on Thursday as the U.S. state with the second-lowest credit rating in the country reported 4,500 jobs lost in October and an upward tick in its unemployment rate.

The latest bad news broke a streak of much-needed labor market improvement that had been slow but steady for the Garden State, and it came in advance of a planned $525 million state borrowing on Dec. 3.

The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage point to 6.6 percent in October. More than half of the jobs lost were in the private sector, particularly in construction, preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed.

A spate of casino closures in Atlantic City, which has suffered from increased competition in nearby states, also weighed on the state in October, as they did in September, said New Jersey labor spokesman Brian Murray.

Accommodation and food service jobs declined by 2,200 jobs in October, due in part to the closure of the Trump Plaza, he said.

The state has now recovered only 48 percent of the jobs it lost during the 2007-2009 recession, far less than New York and nationwide, according to the left-leaning research group New Jersey Policy Perspective.

Wall Street credit rating agencies have downgraded the state eight times because of its poor economic recovery and large public pension shortfalls. Governor Chris Christie, a potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate, took controversial actions – not putting the money into the pension system that the state was supposed to contribute – in the middle of a budget crunch this year.

Obama’s Amnesty Will Add As Many Foreign Workers As New Jobs Since 2009

Obama’s Amnesty Will Add As Many Foreign Workers As New Jobs Since 2009
10:37 AM 11/20/2014

President Barack Obama’s unilateral amnesty will quickly add as many foreign workers to the nation’s legal labor force as the total number of new jobs created by his economy since 2009.

The plans, expected to be announced late Nov. 20, will distribute five million work permits to illegal immigrants, and also create a new inflow of foreign college graduates for prestigious salaried jobs, according to press reports.

Obama has already provided or promised almost one million extra work permits to foreigners, while his economy has only added six million jobs since 2009.

Under the president’s new amnesty plan, “up to four million undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least five years can apply. … An additional one million people will get protection from deportation through other parts of the president’s plan,” according to a Nov. 19 report in The New York Times.

The five million total was attributed to “people briefed on his plans,” the Times reports.

The five million work permits will add to Obama’s prior giveaways, which have provided work permits to almost one million foreigners.

Going to court in N.J. just got more expensive

“Yes, those ballot questions do cost you more now….. Legislation implementing those changes also loosens bail rules for low-risk offenders who aren’t deemed likely to pose a flight or safety risk. (or so they say??? ) That will require new staffers, electronic monitoring, drug testing and treatment services that legislative budget analysts say will cost around $35 million a year” Michelle Talamo

TRENTON  — Filing a lawsuit, seeking a divorce and obtaining gun permits are now more expensive in New Jersey.

The state judiciary has hiked roughly 80 of its fees, with the extra cost to court users projected at more than $42 million a year. The higher fees formally take effect Monday, but started with court papers filed electronically after 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The money will be used for three purposes, including the creation of a new system for assessing defendants’ bail status to implement changes state voters approved last week.

“While no one wants to pay more money for government services, the reality is that additional funding is needed to support these important changes,” Appellate Judge Glenn Grant, acting administrative director of the courts, told the Asbury Park Press.

Judiciary officials dialed back a few of the increases originally proposed in September.

We all know that the transportation fund is a black hole of graft an corruption. Why else do the unions want it fully funded? Also gotta love how Senate Budget Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo sees no alternative other than raising the gas tax, but then in the next breath he proposes lowering or doing away with taxes on pension benefits!!! How are the two related you ask? Good question, but probably too difficult for our union hacks to answer because they love riding this gravy train.

Reader says Some really bad decisions are being made because the town is looking for a buck

I do think that is a factor right now. Think about it, the ridiculous bike lane was done bc the town received outside money , a study is being funded by the freeholders (not the town) to study parking, Blais said at the meeting the other night that no independent studies have been/would be conducted on housing bc we don’t have 100k to spend, etc, and they want developers to take over so they can fund traffic improvements that we can’t. Some really bad decisions are being made bc the town is looking for a buck.

Reader says When the developers financial interests matter more than the increased burden on residents they are no longer representing our best interests

Our government should absolutely be representing our best interests, and repealing the proposition that lead to the multi-family housing and Valley expansion fiascos would be a great start. When the developers financial interests matter more than the increased burden on residents they are no longer representing our best interests. If I owned a 3 bedroom home right now in need of any updating, I would be very worried about my home value decreasing too ( all values might go down a bit but that would seem the hardest hit).

Reader asks an increase of 300-500 new residential units how might affect Village Services ,Schools ,Water ,Recreation and so on

To ask them how an increase of 300-500 new residential units might affect their dept. Would they need to hire more staff? Would they need more equipment? What might these additions cost? Can our parks, both passive & recreational. handle more residents effectively? Would we need additional water treatment facilities? Would we have to float another bond to expand our schools? Would we need to hire more teachers? All of these departments are impacted by a potential increase of 300-500 apartments. Sure, our downtown would get more foot traffic, but we should also be researching how it will affect the village as a whole. That’s why you need reports.

President Obama to announce executive action on immigration Thursday

By Juliet Eilperin and Ed O’Keefe

President Obama will announce Thursday that he will use his executive authority to expand temporary protections to millions of undocumented immigrants, according to several individuals who have been briefed on the decision. Obama will travel to Las Vegas on the heels of that announcement to rally support for his initiative on Friday.

Congress will receive official details on the move Thursday, according to a senior Democratic Party official.

Even before final confirmation of the president’s plans, outside advocates began readying events to promote the administration’s immigration policy.

“We hear there will be a prime time Thursday evening announcement (to preview) and full unveiling in Vegas on Friday,” immigration advocate Dawn Le wrote in an email to other activists, which was later inadvertently sent to a group of reporters Wednesday morning. “Can folks begin to work and plan watch parties for Thursday and/or Friday? Unclear whether Thursday night content will be what is “celebratory”, but Friday will be where we need a lot of energy guaranteed.”
