3 Reasons Military Veterans Make Topnotch Employees

Job-satisfaction-of-women-in-the-military

August 1,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Politicians call them heroes and strangers thank them for their service.

But when their enlistment comes to an end, veterans need more than a pat on the back as they return to civilian life. They need jobs.

And increasingly, they seem to be getting them because the unemployment rate among veterans has been on the decline in recent years. In May, the veteran unemployment rate was 3.4 percent, down from 5 percent for the same month in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That compares to a 4.7 percent overall unemployment rate.

“I think in the last several years there has been a focus on the importance of hiring veterans and many businesses have taken that to heart,” says Nick Baucom, a U.S. Marine veteran who makes hiring veterans a priority for his company, Two Marines Moving (www.TwoMarinesMoving.com).

“But probably the biggest reason that the unemployment rate for veterans has trended downward is that, as a group, veterans bring with them experience and attitudes that make them great employees.”

Baucom’s moving company employs more than 100 veterans between its two locations – the Washington, D.C., area and Miami. He’s wants to hire more because his company is booked three to four weeks in advance and he could use the extra help.

“But with the unemployment rate for veterans dropping, it’s becoming more challenging to hire them,” says Baucom, who also is author of “On the Move: A Marine’s Guide to Entrepreneurial Success.”

“I can’t complain too much, though, because I’m glad so many other employers are seeing the benefits of having veterans in their workforce.”

Baucom says there are several reasons veterans make topnotch employees, including:

• Their tenacity. Veterans know what perseverance is all about, if for no other reason than they survived boot camp, an arduous challenge that puts a person’s fortitude to to the test. Marines, for example, must prove they can hike 20 miles carrying a fully loaded pack.
• Their decisiveness. People in the military don’t always have the luxury of taking all day to analyze a situation before making a decision. Yes, they must gather data and understand it thoroughly – but they understand the need to do it expediently. “A 90 percent solution now is better than a 100 percent solution later,” Baucom says. “Both in the Marines and in the business world, I’ve found that waiting for that 100 percent solution just leads to paralysis.”
• Their initiative. Anyone in the military learns to follow orders. But they also understand that there are situations when they need to take action in the absence of orders. If something needs to be done, they don’t have to wait to be told.

“I know that Marines go through quite an ordeal in their training and in carrying out their missions,” Baucom says. “When we ask them to move a piano, it probably doesn’t seem all that difficult in comparison.”

Baucom, who also is author of “On the Move: A Marine’s Guide to Entrepreneurial Success,” served in the U.S. Marines from 2002 to 2008, and was in Iraq in 2003.

MTV’s Newest Channel Is Nonstop Nostalgia

Pat Benatar I want my MTV

1983 : “I want my MTV !” – Pat Benatar

Beavis and Butt-head, Daria, and Total Request Live emerge from the vaults on MTV Classic.

Over the years, MTV has been the impish child, the rebellious teenager and the devil-may-care twentysomething.

Now, as it rounds into middle age, the network that brought a cultural revolution to television is making a big bet on nostalgia. In an old Art Deco building in Los Angeles, engineers are feverishly digitizing old VHS tapes filled with live performances and interviews from the many musicians and stars that have graced MTV’s studios in the past 35 years, assembling one of the world’s greatest libraries of pop culture ephemera. A network that has been an afterthought, VH1 Classic, is being transformed into MTV Classic, a new home for old hits Beavis & Butt-head, Daria and Jackass and reruns of music shows Unplugged and Storytellers.

MTV Classic marks a major strategic shift at MTV, which has typically shunned its past. Executives wanted to create the next Jersey Shore and Total Request Live rather than relive the good old days. But the network, owned by struggling media giant Viacom Inc., has suffered from falling ratings and a lack of buzzworthy hits.

It packs hundreds of times more information per square inch than best currently available technologies, study says

By manipulating the interactions between individual atoms, scientists report they have created a device that can pack hundreds of times more information per square inch than the best currently available data-storage technologies.

The working prototype is part of a decades-long attempt to shrink electronics down to the atomic level, a feat scientists believe would allow them to store information much more efficiently, in less space and more cheaply. By comparison, tech companies today build warehouse-sized data centers to store the billions of photos, videos and posts consumers upload to the internet daily. Corporations including International Business Machines Corp. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. also have explored research to reduce such space needs.

Princeton sex assault suspect charged in 2nd incident

PRINCETON – A man accused of breaking into a Birch Avenue home and sexually assaulting a woman in her sleep Wednesday, also broke into another home on the same street weeks earlier, police said Friday.

Pedro Arias-Santiago, 26, of Princeton, was initially arrested just after midnight Wednesday after a 28-year-old woman said she woke up to find him sexually assaulting her in her sleep. She ran from the house and called police, who quickly arrested Arias-Santiago outside.

The news of the assault was widely published and on Thursday, another woman came forward.

The second woman – a 19-year-old from Illinois – told police she was staying at the home on Birch Avenue around 5 a.m. on June 14 when Arias-Santiago came in through an unlocked door. She heard Arias-Santiago inside and confronted him, police said. Arias-Santiago fled the house but the woman did not file a report until this week.

She was not sexually assaulted in the burglary, police said.

Dow, S&P 500 shake off Brexit, log best week of 2016

Published: July 1, 2016 4:42 p.m. ET

U.S. stocks booked a fourth straight daily gain Friday, and the Dow and S&P 500 marked their best week this year as stocks clawed back some of the losses scored in the wake of the tumult that followed the U.K.’s decision last week to sever ties with the European Union.

Better-than-expected manufacturing data combined with fading worries about the Brexit, or British exit from the EU, stoked appetite for equities.

Media firms lose control of news as tech platforms rise

Bergen record Newspaper-vending-machine2

Rob Lever•June 29, 2016

Washington (AFP) – When allegations emerged that Facebook was skewing its trending news stories, many learned about it… on Facebook.

That underscored the rapid shift in media — not only is news moving from print to digital, but Facebook, Google and other tech platforms are increasingly becoming the main gateways for information.

Technology and social media firms are increasingly playing a role in filtering and delivering news, often with automated feeds, algorithms and “bots” designed to determine the most relevant articles.

That means the news industry is rapidly losing control of the news along with the revenue that goes with it, underscoring the profound changes in the journalism world.

“In the past 18 months, companies including Facebook, Apple, Twitter, Snapchat, and Google have moved from having an arm’s length relationship with journalism to being dominant forces in the news ecosystem,” said a June report by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.

“By encouraging news publishers to post directly onto new channels, such as Facebook Instant Articles and Snapchat Discover, tech companies are now actively involved in every aspect of journalism.”

An Earlier Incident with a Broken Water Line: Damaged Property and Delayed Settlements for Homeowners In Fall 2009, a 62” water line burst catastrophically near Studio City in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Eight months after the fact, homeowners and businesses still awaited the compensation they’d been promised for their extensive damages.

The burst pipe flooded numerous homes, many of them worth millions of dollars. Homeowners were displaced, costly belongings were lost or damaged, and months later, homeowners also wanted reimbursements for the very costly rent of their temporary abodes. Years later, in 2014, an 8” water pipe burst less than half a mile from the site of the 2009 incident, creating a 40-foot geyser of pressurized water in the middle of a residential area.

Also in 2009, around the same time as the Studio City water main break, a broken water main in Historic Fillipinotown led to the formation of a sinkhole 20 feet in diameter. Overall, LA has an alarming recent history of catastrophic water main breaks. A Burst Water Main in Hoboken NJ Caused A Massive Sinkhole

Water Main pipe broken Hoboken NJ

Just a few months ago, a water main burst at an intersection in Hoboken, NJ. The 12” pipe burst around 6 AM on March 15th, creating a sinkhole that swallowed at least one vehicle. During urgent repairs, nearby residents experienced lowered water pressure and other issues as utility workers rushed to repair the line. The pipe had already burst once the year before, leaving many nearby residents without running water over Thanksgiving weekend in 2015.

Water main breaks have been a consistent problem in Hoboken. One local resident remarked, “It feels like it happens every couple of weeks.” The local water company, Suez Water, has reported that residents should expect a staggering two water main breaks per month until the city finishes water line replacement for over 40 miles of aged infrastructure, some of which is over 100 years old.

With only $350,000 per year budgeted for municipal water line replacement, the city faces a massive budgetary problem. This is far from uncommon throughout the United States, as the cost of replacing hundreds of total miles of infrastructure outstrips local budgets.

Ridgewood NJ, Glen Rock Patch calls ethics complaint , “Gadfly Files Ethics Complaint Against Ridgewood Mayor, Manager” ( https://patch.com/new-jersey/ridgewood/gadfly-files-ethics-complaint-against-ridgewood-mayor-manager ) . Interesting choir of words , once again leading to the question why is the Patch always looking to protect Mayor Aronsohn ?

While the “Patch” came under heavy criticism for its coverage lapses during the Ridgewood Village Council election ,the above headline will do nothing but add fuel to the fire that the Patch continues to chose the Village Council Majority over Village of Ridgewood residents and taxpayers .

Schedler Park Development in Ridgewood put on hold

Save Our Schedler Members & Friends at the Schedler House

June 2,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, the major news from last nights council meeting was that Schedler Park has been put on hold until 2017 and only under the direction of the new Village Council with the use of expert studies.

This is a huge victory for the neighborhood who has been fighting to preserve both the natural environment at Schedler but also preserve the historic significance of the sight .

Neighbors felt the sight was unsuitable for a baseball field for many reasons including the noise from Route 17, parking issues and the lack of road infrastructure ,which they felt would overwhelm the neighborhood.

There was also fears that wildlife habitat would be lost when it was discovered eagles used the area as a food source.
