`Anonymized’ credit card data not so anonymous, study shows

By SETH BORENSTEIN and JACK GILLUM
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Credit card data isn’t quite as anonymous as promised, a new study says.

Scientists showed they can identify you with more than 90 percent accuracy by looking at just four purchases, three if the price is included – and this is after companies “anonymized” the transaction records, saying they wiped away names and other personal details. The study out of MIT, published Thursday in the journal Science, examined three months of credit card records for 1.1 million people.

“We are showing that the privacy we are told that we have isn’t real,” study co-author Alex “Sandy” Pentland of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said in an email.

Companies routinely strip away personal identifiers from credit card data when they share information with outsiders, saying the data is now safe because it is “anonymized.” But the MIT researchers showed that anonymized isn’t quite the same as anonymous.

Drawing upon a sea of data in an unnamed developed country, the researchers pieced together available information to see how easily they could identify somebody. They looked at information from 10,000 shops, with each data piece time-stamped to calculate how many pieces of data it would take on average to find somebody, said study lead author Yves-Alexandre de Montjoye, also of MIT.

Reader says new bike lane by the Ridgewood train station appears very ill-conceived, dangerous and might not be legal in New Jersey

The new bike lane by the Ridgewood train station strikes me as very ill-conceived, and frankly, dangerous.  It is the first bike lane I have ever seen that crosses over from the right shoulder into a space between two car lanes.  The fact that it is on a sharp decline, just after a hard right turn, and just before a busy intersection, makes it even worse.

I did some quick research and it looks as though such a bike lane might not be legal in New Jersey.  A rule adopted by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs in 1997 states: “Bicycle lanes, where provided, shall be placed in the outside lane of a roadway, adjacent to the curb or shoulder.”  See 29 N.J.R. 159(a).  There is language in the rule adoption about an expiration date in 2002.  I am not sure if the rule is still in effect or not, and admittedly, New Jersey Administrative law is not my area of expertise, but perhaps someone else can comment on this.

If the rule has expired, it should be readopted at the state level.  Or another option would be for Ridgewood to write this requirement into its own municipal code.  The Borough of Medford Lakes, New Jersey has done just that (see the Medford Lakes Municipal Code, §145-124(b)).

At any rate, Ridgewood should rethink the new bicycle lane for the safety of its bicyclists, as well as the peace of mind of its drivers.

AG Nominee Loretta Lynch Says Civil Asset Forfeiture ‘Protections Are There.’ Not When Her Office Ignores Them.

Long Island business had nearly half a million seized for more than two years without any court filing.

Scott Shackford|Jan. 29, 2015 12:15 pm

U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch, nominated to replace Eric Holder as attorney general, sat before the Senate’s Judiciary Committee to be asked questions (or sit through speeches from senators only vaguely approaching the concept of a question) about President Barack Obama’s use of executive authority on immigration, waterboarding, prosecuting terrorists, marijuana legalization, Operation Chokepoint, gay marriage recognition, and a number of other issues. The hearings and speeches continue today.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) yesterday brought up asset forfeiture to gauge Lynch’s position. He wanted to know whether Lynch thought the way the Department of Justice in partnership with local law enforcement agencies handle criminal and more particularly civil asset forfeiture was “fair.”

Lynch responded that “civil and criminal forfeiture are very important tools of the Department of Justice as well as our state and local counterparts.” Speaking directly about civil asset forfeiture, she claimed that such forfeiture is “done pursuant to supervision by a court, it is done pursuant to court order, and I believe the protections are there.”

That would come as news to the three brothers of the Hirsch family in Long Island. In 2012, they saw $447,000 of their assets seized by the IRS and the Department of Justice over an allegation that their business Bi-County Distributors, which delivers snack foods to convenience stores, was deliberately depositing cash deposits in amounts smaller than $10,000 in order to avoid IRS reporting requirements.

Paul Hagen’s Cancer Fundraiser

Paul Hagen is battling cancer for a 3rd time in 8 years. We’ve created a fundraising effort to help him offset this huge financial burden.

Hey friends. . our Buddy Paul could use our help! In 2007 Paul had “stage 4” Prostate cancer and had to have a radical prostectomy and in 2013 the cancer reappeared in his neck as “stage 4” cancer as well. Both times he beat the cancer down with radiation and chemotherapy. A few months ago it was discovered that the cancer has returned as small spots on his spine. He is on some very revolutionary and promising drugs (“xgeva” and “xtandi”) to beat this back one more time and could use all of our help with the financial toll that fighting cancer for 3 times in 8 years has caused. Through all of this Paul has displayed incredible courage and resolve in beating it down each time. Let’s support Paul in this quest! All contributions are greatly appreciated!!!!

GOP moves to oust Douglas Elmendorf as head of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO)

By Rebecca Shabad – 01/28/15 05:31 PM EST

Republicans on the Budget committees are interviewing candidates to replace Douglas Elmendorf as head of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), according to four people with direct knowledge of the process.

While GOP leaders haven’t publicly confirmed the plan to boot Elmendorf from the nonpartisan office, Republicans have approached several potential candidates about stepping in, sources say.

They also say the search is moving toward an end and that Republicans already have a shortlist of candidates.

According to sources, those approached include Alex Brill, a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and an economist on former President George W. Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers; Jeffrey Brown, a finance professor at the University of Illinois who also served on the Council under Bush; and Warren Payne, who was policy director under former House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.).

“I would just say that we are looking forward to having a new director and some changes,” Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), a member of the Budget panel, told The Hill on Wednesday.

Can Israel Survive?
Traditional pillars of the tiny democracy’s security have begun to erode.
By Victor Davis Hanson

Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East and North Africa. Eight million Israelis are surrounded by some 400 million Muslims in more than 20 states. Almost all of Israel’s neighbors are anti-Israeli dictatorships, monarchies, or theocracies — a number of them reduced to a state of terrorist chaos.

Given the rise of radical Islam, the huge petrodollar wealth of the Middle East, and lopsided demography, how has Israel so far survived?

The Jewish state has always depended on three unspoken assumptions for its tenuous existence.

First, a democratic, nuclear Israel can deter larger enemies. In the Cold War, Soviet-backed Arab enemies understood that Israel’s nuclear arsenal prevented them from destroying Tel Aviv.

New Jersey Parents Voice Concerns About Tests Linked to Common Core

JERSEY CITY, N.J.—Parents and educators anxious about new state tests starting in March vented their frustrations Wednesday at a hearing in a middle-school auditorium here.

Speaker after speaker told a state commission at the hearing that the new online tests would eat up too much class time, be too hard, hurt students’ self esteem and waste taxpayer money. The exams in math and language arts will cover public-school students from third to 11th grade. (Brody/PolitickerNJ)

HACKENSACK — Bergen County’s newest freeholder, labor leader Thomas J. Sullivan Jr., was sworn in Wednesday, vowing to “listen to everyone’s voice.”

Flanked by his family, Sullivan took the oath of office administered by County Executive and fellow Democrat James Tedesco during the board meeting.

Sullivan was chosen Sunday by members of the county Democratic Committee to fill the seat vacated by Tedesco on Jan. 1. He would next have to run in the November election to serve the last remaining year on Tedesco’s three-year term.

“I can’t think of somebody that would represent the people of Bergen County, and all the people of Bergen County, better than Tom,” Tedesco said.

Tedesco previously had sworn Sullivan in at a private ceremony in the freeholder chambers on Monday morning.

GLEN ROCK — The Borough Council voted Wednesday night to hire two police officers to fill vacancies, but continued this week to resist residents’ calls to reinstate two policemen suspended for deleting two photos from a department computer.

Only a handful of the more than 40 residents in attendance for Wednesday night’s meeting addressed the council, but all chided them for keeping longtime officers Christopher McInerney and Bryan Scott off of the borough’s payroll.

“I am asking you to get [the two officers] back as part of our community,” said resident Michael Donahue, eliciting applause from the audience; he called the suspensions “de facto” punishments.

“Let’s get these gentlemen back on  the  payroll until it is adjudicated,” Donahue insisted.

McInerney and Scott also had their health benefits cut in late December when they were suspended.

“You should be ashamed of yourselves; I am ashamed of you,” Dan McInerney, the brother of one of the officers, told the council.

No plans yet for Ridgewood’s Schedler property, house

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

As a piece of Ridgewood property has continued to sit in limbo for the past year, the issue seemingly comes down to money.

Neighbors in favor of a park with lots of trees are making some financial steps, while those in favor of a large baseball field for the older athletes are considering others.

But, since making an initial step toward a grant to stabilize the Schedler house’s roof at the urging of some neighbors, the village – which officials say is currently not in a position to fund any changes to this property – is holding off on future movements.

Eastside neighbors of the Schedler property on West Saddle River Road, who want to both preserve the roughly 200-year-old Schedler house currently languishing on the property and create a family park, are now creating a 501(c)(3) to collect donations from “Friends of the Historic Zabriskie-Schedler House and Family Park.”

“Probably in a month or two we should have that running,” Ridgewood Eastside Development (RED) leader Isabella Altano said last week. Altano is an architect from that neighborhood who is in favor of preserving the house.

Millions to owe Obamacare tax penalty

By Tami Luhby   @Luhby January 28, 2015: 4:03 PM ET

Were you uninsured in 2014? It’s time to pay the piper!

Some 3 million to 6 million Americans will have to pay an Obamacare tax penalty for not having health insurance last year, Treasury officials said Wednesday. It’s the first time they have given estimates for how many people will be subject to a fine.

The penalty is $95, or 1% of income above a certain threshold (roughly $20,000 for a couple). So you could end up owing the IRS a lot of money.

Take a married couple with $100,000 in income – their bill comes to $797, according to the Tax Policy Center ACA penalty calculator.

The penalty for remaining uninsured rises to the larger of $325 or 2% of income in 2015.
