Mid-Air Mayhem: Off-Duty NJ Detectives & Retired Police Chief Subdue Unruly Airline Passenger

Newark NJ, What began as a routine flight from Newark to Florida quickly turned into mid-air chaos when an intoxicated passenger launched an aggressive tirade against flight crew members. Fortunately for everyone on board, three off-duty New Jersey law enforcement officers and a former police chief were sitting in coach, ready to spring into action.

45 Minutes of Aggression at 30,000 Feet

On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, United Airlines flight passengers bound for Fort Lauderdale witnessed a growing disturbance caused by 36-year-old Daniel Borman of Springfield, New Jersey.

According to eye-witness accounts, Borman appeared heavily intoxicated and spent nearly 45 minutes berating flight attendants after they refused to serve him additional alcohol. The situation rapidly escalated as Borman began shouting profanities and making verbal threats, eventually turning physical mid-flight.

Off-Duty Responders Team Up Mid-Air

Unbeknownst to the unruly traveler, several experienced law enforcement officers were on board:

• Bergen County Sheriff’s Detectives: Cesar Fernandez, Jonathan Veloz, and Gianina Ocasio were traveling on the flight.

• Former Minneapolis Police Chief: Brian O’Hara, a 25-year law enforcement veteran who previously led public safety operations in Newark, was also a passenger.

When the confrontation turned physical, the three Bergen County detectives rushed from the back of the aircraft to assist O’Hara. Working together, the group restrained Borman using plastic flex cuffs and kept him under control for the remainder of the flight.

Upon landing at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Broward County Sheriff’s Deputies boarded the aircraft and escorted Borman off the plane into custody.

Sheriff Commends Officers for Quick Action

Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton praised the detectives for their swift intervention and composure during a potentially dangerous emergency.

“I commend our detectives for their professionalism, sound judgment, and ability to remain composed while managing a potentially volatile situation,” said Sheriff Cureton. “Their quick thinking and decisive actions helped prevent the situation from escalating into something more serious… This is another example of our officers understanding that their responsibility to protect and serve extends beyond the boundaries of Bergen County.”

Footage of Broward County deputies taking Borman into custody was later shared online by O’Hara’s wife, Newark Police Lt. Wafiyyah O’Hara, praising the brave officers who stepped up to ensure passenger safety.
