Children who are taking part in the Paterson Youth Photography Project (PYPP – pronounced “pip”) are exhibiting their 2011-2012 photos at the Ridgewood Public Library through the end of December.
“The mission of the program is to enrich the lives of school age children in Paterson by introducing them to photography as a means for self-expression and an opportunity for personal growth,” said Gwenn Karel Levine, the organization’s president.
PYPP is a mentoring program for 8 to15-year-old inner city kids. Digital photography classes take place on Saturday mornings in a computer lab at Passaic County Community College. Digital cameras are loaned to the students each semester, and they use Adobe Bridge software to organize, critique, and rate their photos with the help of PYPP teachers.
The children go on field trips during class and take cameras home for assignments such as portraits, buildings and structures, trick photography, colors and shapes, lines and curves, reflections and shadows, and making the ordinary extraordinary.
