Washington DC, Congress has officially stepped in to investigate New Jersey’s voter registration controversy, setting a strict deadline of August 17 for state officials to hand over key documents.
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil sent a formal document request to NJ Secretary of State (and Lieutenant Governor) Dr. Dale Caldwell. The leaders are demanding full transparency and records regarding the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) voter registration error that added 6,600 non-citizens to New Jersey’s voter rolls.
Key Questions Facing State Officials
The congressional inquiry mirrors concerns raised by New Jersey Assembly Republicans over recent weeks, focusing on three major points:
-
Failure to Clean Voter Rolls: Why did state officials fail to promptly remove ineligible registrants after discovering the error?
-
Delayed Disclosure: Why was this critical issue kept from the public eye for over two years?
-
Database Cooperation: Why has New Jersey consistently refused to utilize the Department of Homeland Security’s SAVE database to verify voter eligibility?
Secretary Caldwell has until 5:00 PM on August 17 to comply with the federal records request.
Federal Prosecutions and Local Legislative Inaction
The congressional inquiry comes alongside an independent probe by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). A DOJ official indicated that any non-citizens who illegally cast ballots in elections could face criminal prosecution.
Despite growing pressure, action within Trenton remains stalled. Assembly Republicans formally requested two weeks ago that Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin form a Special Legislative Committee with subpoena power to investigate the oversight. To date, Speaker Coughlin has not responded.
Congress chose not to wait for Trenton to act—leaving state leaders under tight pressure as the mid-August deadline approaches.
