River Edge NJ, A quiet Bergen County intersection turned into the scene of a major emergency operation early Wednesday morning after a violent car crash sparked a building fire, trapping multiple residents on upper-floor fire escapes.

First responders from several surrounding towns rushed to the scene, coordinating a swift tactical response that prevented a burgeoning community tragedy.

Car Strikes Building and Explodes into Flames

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the high-traffic intersection of Kinderkamack Road and Midland Avenue. Reports indicated a severe motor vehicle accident where a car had slammed directly into a commercial/residential structure and caught fire.

Upon arriving at the scene, River Edge Fire Chief 1-0 confirmed a heavily compromised situation and immediately escalated the emergency to a Working Fire Assignment.

Before fire crews even unreeled their lines, heroic actions were already underway. Alert officers from the River Edge Police Department rushed to the burning vehicle, successfully pulling the injured driver and passenger to safety. Police officers provided critical initial medical care at the perimeter until staging emergency medical services took over.

Firefighters Battle the Blaze While Stopping Structural Extension

As River Edge Engine 3 arrived on scene, crews immediately deployed a primary hose line to suppress the vehicle fire consuming the storefront.

Simultaneously, tactical teams from Squad 4 pulled a secondary line from Engine 3. Their objective was defensive: push into the structure to protect the interior of the impacted building and establish a thermal barrier to stop the fire from climbing or extending deeper into the property.

High-Stakes Rescue: Residents Trapped on Fire Escapes

As thick, toxic smoke filled the upper floors, the incident quickly shifted into a life-saving rescue operation.

Teams from Ladder 1 and Squad 4 breached the structure. While interior teams pushed through zero-visibility conditions, exterior members of Ladder 1 conducted an immediate perimeter assessment while laddering the building.

On the second floor, firefighters located three residents trapped on the exterior fire escapes, forced out of their apartments by heavy smoke. Among those stranded was one non-ambulatory resident unable to move without assistance. Firefighters systematically brought all three occupants down safely. They were immediately turned over to Holy Name EMS and Hackensack Meridian EMS personnel to be evaluated for severe smoke inhalation.

While the rescues were being executed, specialized teams performed high-risk Vent, Enter, Search (VES) operations in the second-floor apartments to guarantee no other residents or pets were left behind. Fortunately, no further victims were found.

A Massive Regional Mutual Aid Response

The successful containment of the fire and the safe evacuation of the building required a massive, coordinated regional effort across Bergen County:

  • Oradell & New Milford Fire Departments: Provided vital manpower to assist with secondary searches, structural ventilation, checking for hidden fire extension, and securing utility lines.

  • Hackensack Fire Department: Deployed their specialized FAST Team (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) for responder safety.

  • Paramus Fire Department: Provided an additional engine company to support active fire lines.

Aftermath and Investigation

Officials confirmed that three individuals were transported to local hospitals for further medical evaluation. The American Red Cross arrived on the scene early Wednesday morning to provide emergency housing and assistance to the residents displaced by the smoke and structural damage.

The exact cause of the initial motor vehicle accident remains unknown. The incident is currently under active, joint investigation by the River Edge Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
