Ridgewood NJ, a viral Reddit post last week claimed that ChatGPT saved someone’s life by identifying early symptoms of a heart attack, prompting the user to seek emergency medical care. The post received over 50,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments, inspiring stories of how others use AI in their daily lives.

There was just one problem: none of it actually happened.

Holy Fake News Batman: The Hoax Unveiled

The post, shared by Redditor u/sinebiryan in the r/ChatGPT subreddit, was later revealed to be a hoax. The user admitted they had asked ChatGPT to generate a Reddit-style post about how the AI saved their life.

“I asked ChatGPT to write like a Reddit post and the post is about a story about how ChatGPT saved my life,” the user confessed.

By the time the truth came out, the story had already gone viral, with thousands of comments and discussions about the AI’s potential for life-saving uses.

Why It Went Viral

The story gained traction partly because of the growing enthusiasm surrounding AI and its applications. In the comments, many users eagerly shared their own experiences using ChatGPT for various needs:

One commenter, claiming to be a cardiac emergency nurse, even said, “As a nurse who specializes in cardiac emergency, yes you were saved by your curiosity and ChatGPT. This is the power of AI, and it’s increasingly showing its true potential.”

The Skeptics Speak Out

Not everyone bought the story. Some Redditors suspected it was AI-generated from the start, citing telltale signs like:

Overuse of hyphens.
Long, polished prose that felt too perfect.
The “gut feeling” that something was off.

One skeptical user even compared the writing style of the post with the user’s other contributions, concluding that the styles didn’t match.

A Cautionary Tale for the Internet Age

This viral hoax highlights two key realities of the digital age:

AI-Generated Text Is Hard to Spot: With tools like ChatGPT producing increasingly human-like responses, distinguishing fact from fiction is becoming more challenging.
Don’t Believe Everything You Read Online: The internet has always been a breeding ground for misinformation, and AI-generated content only amplifies this issue.

ChatGPT’s Real Role in Health Questions

While ChatGPT is a powerful tool, it’s important to approach its health advice with caution. As some Redditors pointed out, you could just as easily Google your symptoms and arrive at the same conclusions.

In situations involving health emergencies, relying on a search engine—or better yet, consulting a medical professional—is still the safest course of action.

  1. Reddit is mostly made-up nonsense. It and Pinterest are two of the most useless sites on the web. It’s all useless and without useful purpose.
