Ho-Ho-Kus NJ, A Tuesday evening dinner rush turned into a chaotic scene in Bergen County after a commercial kitchen fire broke out at an active, operating restaurant.
Thanks to the rapid deployment of local firefighters and seamless cooperation among neighboring towns, what could have been a devastating structural disaster was quickly contained with zero injuries reported.
Smoke Billows from Entrance as Restaurant Staff Fight Blaze
At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported kitchen fire at a restaurant located on Sheridan Avenue.
Before first responders even arrived on the scene, restaurant staff bravely attempted to contain the flames using on-site extinguishers. Unfortunately, those initial efforts were unsuccessful.
When the first fire department units pulled up, they encountered heavy smoke billowing from the front entrance of the building. Fortunately, the establishment’s evacuation plan worked perfectly: all employees and patrons had already safely evacuated the smoke-filled building.
Mutual Aid Called In as Engine 733 Battles the Inferno
Recognizing the high risk of a commercial building fire spreading to adjacent structures, the Incident Command immediately upgraded the call to a Working Fire assignment. This strategic move instantly mobilized critical mutual aid backup from neighboring Bergen County departments.
The crew of the first-arriving Engine 733 moved aggressively to mitigate the threat. Firefighters quickly stretched a handline through the building, tracking the source of the heavy smoke directly to a large commercial oven.
The team executed a rapid knock-down of the flames, successfully containing the fire before it could breach the kitchen walls or compromise the main structure of the restaurant.
The Aftermath: Heavy Damage But Zero Injuries
While the swift response prevented a total loss, the incident did leave a mark:
-
The Oven: The large commercial oven where the fire originated was completely destroyed by the intense heat.
-
Property Damage: Structural damage to the building was successfully prevented, though the property sustained moderate water and smoke damage from the suppression efforts.
-
Injuries: Most importantly, officials confirmed there were absolutely no injuries reported among civilians or first responders.
Following the successful operation, the Ho-Ho-Kus Fire Department extended its sincere gratitude to all responding mutual aid departments for their seamless teamwork. Local residents and officials alike are wishing the affected business a smooth cleanup process and a speedy recovery and reopening!
