Ridgewood NJ, Diwali, Dewali, Deepavali, or Divali, also known as the Festival of Lights is a Hindu religious festival and one of the most important festivals within Hinduism. It generally lasts five days, and is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar months of Ashwayuja and Kartika.
Diwali, like many other Indian holidays, is based on the Indian lunar calendar, so the (internationally used) date of the festival changes each year, but it typically falls between mid-October and early November.
Diwali festivities usually last for 5 days. Each day has a different name and rituals. In 2022, Diwalifell on October 24th and the main celebrations last from October 22nd to 26th.
The most important third day is the main day of Diwali — October 24th — when it is the best time to worship the Goddess Lakshmi (the god of wealth) and the time for a grand family feast.
This year Ridgewood schools were closed on Monday the 24th in honor of the holiday.
Ridgewood resident Saurabh Dani explained in a Facebook post, “If you see holiday lights at some of your neighbor’s homes today, or if you hear firecrackers today evening, probably that’s because your neighbor is celebrating Diwali. Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, and people of Indian heritage and non-Indian heritage. Despite each faith having its own historical legends and celebratory events, the holiday represents the same symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. (It’s celebrated on new moon day, when the sky is dark). Diwali is synchronized with the lunar calendar so the actual dates vary from year to year. Diwali typically falls between October and November. Most families light diyas or candles in their homes and celebrate this special holiday by enjoying sweets and delicious food. Generally, Diwali is celebrated over five days with each day holding a special significance.
