Paws & Parks: The Ultimate Guide to Dog-Friendly Spots in Ridgewood This Summer
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, As the sunshine finally hits North Jersey, there is nothing better than a long walk with your four-legged best friend. However, navigating local ordinances can be tricky. To keep our community safe and our green spaces pristine, the Village is sharing a “Park Smart” refresher for all dog owners.
Before you grab the leash and head out, here is everything you need to know about where your pup can (and can’t) play in Ridgewood.
🐾 Where Can I Walk My Dog in Ridgewood?
Dogs are a welcome sight in many of our beautiful parks! As long as your dog is on a leash (six feet or shorter), you are encouraged to explore these local favorites:
-
Top Picks: Citizens Park & Memorial Park at Van Neste Square.
-
Nature Trails: Dunham Trail & Gypsy Pond Park.
-
Family Favorites: Irene Habernickel Family Park & Twinney Pond Park.
-
Quiet Escapes: Kings Pond, Leuning, Veterans Memorial, Schedler Property, Grove Park, and North Road Park.
🚫 The “No-Paw” Zones
To ensure the safety of our athletes and children, dogs are strictly prohibited from the following areas, even if they are leashed:
-
Public Playing Fields: (Keep the paws off the turf!)
-
Playgrounds & Playscapes: To maintain hygiene and safety for our youngest residents.
💡 Pro-Tips for “Park Smart” Owners
-
The 6-Foot Rule: Always use a standard leash. Retractable leashes that extend beyond six feet can be a tripping hazard on busy Village paths.
-
Scoop the Poop: Help keep Ridgewood beautiful by always carrying waste bags.
-
Check the Turf: On hot days, remember: if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!

Ha! A dog’s commentary on the trash can debacle.
Just wait! Did that dog get permission from the squirrels?
Make sure council and manager knows this. Years ago our very own manager Roberta something didn’t even know dogs were allowed in Habernickel. And also don’t be scared or shooed away by the renter there. She thinks she owns the park and she isn’t even from NJ let alone Ridgewood.
Enjoy your dog walks…just pick up your poop
