Hackensack NJ, The landscape of Route 4 will never look the same. After four decades of serving late-night coffee, massive omelets, and comfort food to generations of Bergen County residents, the Coach House Diner in Hackensack has officially closed its doors.

The sudden closure on April 16, 2026, marks the end of the Pappas family’s ownership and the beginning of a major redevelopment for one of North Jersey’s most recognizable properties.

From Dinners to Detailing: Who Bought the Coach House?

In a move that surprised many long-time patrons, the landmark property was sold to El Car Wash. The Florida-based express car wash giant has been rapidly expanding its footprint across the Garden State, with existing locations in Hasbrouck Heights, Edison, and Cherry Hill.

The sale, brokered by J.C. Kapas Real Estate Company, includes:

  • The 6,700-square-foot diner building.

  • The prime 1.3-acre lot at the intersection of major transit routes.

  • The restaurant’s valuable plenary retail consumption liquor license.

While the final sale price remains undisclosed, real estate experts noted that the combination of high traffic counts and a liquor license made this one of the most coveted pieces of real estate in the region.

A “Truly Special” Generational Handover

For the Pappas family, the Coach House wasn’t just a business; it was a 40-year legacy. Bill Kapas, president of J.C. Kapas Real Estate, emphasized the rarity of such a deal.

“This was a truly special transaction involving a generational family-owned business and one of the most recognizable diner properties in the region,” Kapas said in a statement.

What’s Next for the Site?

El Car Wash plans to redevelop the site into a modern car wash facility. While the demolition of the iconic 24-hour diner will be a somber sight for locals, the move reflects a growing trend of “prime real estate” transitioning from traditional hospitality to high-volume service retail.
