Electrical Transformer Damaged Outside Ridgewood Public Schools Admin Building

Ridgewood NJ, a minor vehicle accident early Friday morning, May 30, led to the leak of hazardous material and temporary power disruption at the Ridgewood Public Schools Administrative Building on Cottage Place.

Employee Accidentally Strikes Transformer

According to officials, the incident occurred when a school district employee accidentally struck a ground-mounted electrical transformer while backing into a parking space. The impact caused the transformer to leak a hazardous liquid used for cooling the equipment.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and emergency response teams acted quickly to contain the situation.

Emergency Response from Ridgewood & Bergen County Units

Emergency crews from the Ridgewood Police Department, Ridgewood Fire Department, and the Bergen County Hazardous Materials Unit swiftly responded to the scene.

Hazmat professionals worked to contain the chemical leak, ensuring public and environmental safety. As a precaution, the administrative building was temporarily switched to generator power while PSE&G crews worked to repair or replace the damaged transformer.

Temporary Power Disruption Addressed

The incident led to a brief disruption in normal operations for the Ridgewood Public Schools Administrative offices. Thanks to the fast response and coordination between local departments and utility workers, generator power was restored, and repairs were underway later the same day.

  1. No steel or concrete bollards protecting the unit? That’s dumb.

    1. High curb more than 4 feet from electrical box, had to work pretty hard to hit it!

  2. Safety is not a priority.

  3. The piece of equipment is far enough from the parking lot that it shouldn’t have been an issue. Extremely poor driving!.

  4. Normal operation? I’m sure half the bldg left saying they were “working from home”
