Morris County, NJ – Travelers on Interstate 80 in Rockaway Township faced yet another headache on May 12, as emergency drainage repairs forced the closure of two left eastbound lanes and the shoulder near Exit 37. While past disruptions have stemmed from multiple sinkholes, this latest issue is a result of a collapsed sewer basin, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).
Not a Sinkhole—But Still Serious
At approximately 5:00 p.m., NJDOT crews shut down the two left lanes on I-80 East to begin addressing the infrastructure failure. The agency emphasized that “the damage is not a sinkhole”, a clarification meant to distinguish this situation from three previous sinkhole incidents along the same corridor.
“Repair crews are enroute and will be working overnight to repair the damaged drainage infrastructure. It is unclear how long repairs may take at this time,” NJDOT officials stated in a press release.

Ongoing Infrastructure Challenges on I-80
This incident adds to a growing list of infrastructure issues along Interstate 80 in Morris County, which has been plagued in recent months by sinkholes caused by aging mine tunnels beneath the roadway. Although unrelated to those collapses, the current drainage failure highlights the need for continued investment in New Jersey’s transportation infrastructure.
