Wharton NJ, Motorists traveling through Wharton, New Jersey, are facing major delays as Interstate 80 is now closed in both directions due to the discovery of another sinkhole, local officials confirmed.
15-Foot Sinkhole Forces Road Closure
Jefferson Mayor Eric Wilsusen alerted residents on Facebook around 6 p.m., announcing that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) had shut down all westbound lanes of I-80 due to the newly discovered sinkhole.
By 8 p.m., NJDOT confirmed the extent of the damage, posting on X that a 15-foot by 15-foot sinkhole had opened in the eastbound median work zone, leading to the closure of westbound lanes at Exit 34B (Route 15 North) as a precautionary measure.
Traffic Delays & Alternative Routes
Authorities, including the New Jersey State Police, have warned drivers to expect significant delays and to seek alternate routes while NJDOT evaluates the situation and determines next steps for repairs.
