Trapped Passenger Rescued After Serious Multi-Vehicle Crash on Route 17 in Paramus

PARAMUS, N.J. — First responders sprang into action Saturday afternoon following a multi-vehicle crash on Route 17 southbound near the Garden State Parkway interchange, leaving a passenger pinned and creating extensive traffic backups across central Bergen County.
Hydraulic Tools Used in High-Stakes Extrication
The collision involved a red MINI Cooper and a gray Mercedes-Benz SUV. The impact left the front-seat passenger of the MINI Cooper trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle.
Specialized crews from the Paramus Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit and firefighters from Paramus Fire Companies 3 & 5 (formerly the Paramus Rescue Squad) deployed hand and hydraulic rescue tools to cut open the vehicle and safely free the trapped passenger.
Two Hospitalized at Hackensack University Medical Center
Once freed, Paramus EMS ambulances transported two individuals to the main campus of Hackensack University Medical Center. A advanced life support paramedic unit from The Valley Hospital also responded to provide emergency medical care at the scene.
Both involved vehicles sustained severe damage and were cleared from the roadway by flatbed tow trucks.
Widespread Traffic Backups on Route 17
The Saturday afternoon incident triggered heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic in both directions along Route 17 near the Garden State Parkway overpass as emergency personnel cleared wreckage and secured the scene.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by local law enforcement.
