Wharton NJ, The sinkhole, caused by the collapse of an abandoned iron mineshaft, appeared on the shoulder of Route 80 early Thursday morning. NJDOT reports that the affected area was stabilized, and excavation work began Thursday night. However, progress may be delayed due to freezing rain in the weekend forecast.

NJDOT’s Statement

“It is too soon to estimate a specific time because of the extensive nature of the repairs and forecasted weather this weekend,” NJDOT said in a Friday update.

Traffic Impact and Detour Options

Eastbound Closure and Alternate Routes

With all eastbound lanes closed, NJDOT has provided alternative routes to help drivers bypass the closure:

Route 46 Eastbound Alternate Route:

  1. Exit at 28/Route 46 eastbound toward Ledgewood or Lake Hopatcong.
  2. Continue on Route 46 eastbound.
  3. At the traffic signal, stay in the left lanes and turn left to remain on Route 46 eastbound.
  4. Turn left onto Route 15 northbound in Dover to reconnect with I-80 eastbound.

Route 15 Alternate Route:

  1. Take Exit 34 from I-80 eastbound to Route 15.
  2. Follow signs for Route 15/Jefferson/Dover/Sparta.
  3. Merge onto Route 15 southbound, then stay left to rejoin I-80 eastbound.

Abandoned Mines in Wharton

The state Geological Survey records reveal the presence of several abandoned iron mines in Wharton, which likely contributed to the collapse. These mines pose ongoing challenges for infrastructure in the region.

Staying Updated

Motorists are encouraged to check 511nj.org for the latest updates on traffic conditions and detour information. NJDOT crews are working “around the clock” to reopen Route 80 as soon as possible.

Weather Considerations

Repairs may face delays due to freezing rain expected over the weekend, potentially complicating efforts to stabilize and reconstruct the roadway.

Stay Safe While Traveling

With detours and potential weather-related hazards, drivers should plan ahead, use alternate routes, and stay informed about traffic updates.

  1. You have absolutely no idea if abandoned mines had anything to do with this.
