Elmwood Park NJ, A somber scene unfolded in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, on Friday afternoon as a fast-moving house fire claimed the life of a local resident. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and local authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the origin and cause of the blaze.


Emergency Response on Market Street

At approximately 2:02 p.m. on May 1, 2026, the Elmwood Park Fire Department and Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Market Street following reports of a structure fire.

First responders arrived to find the home heavily involved. During the aggressive fire suppression efforts, emergency crews made a heartbreaking discovery:

  • Casualty Reported: A male victim was located inside the residence.

  • On-Scene Declaration: Despite the efforts of paramedics and firefighters, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the fire.

Arson Task Force Joins Investigation

Given the fatal nature of the incident, the Elmwood Park Police Department immediately notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office (BCPO) Arson Squad.

Prosecutor Mark Musella confirmed that the Major Crimes Unit and the Arson Task Force are now leading the investigation. The collaborative effort includes:

  • Elmwood Park Police: Directed by Chief Michael Foligno.

As of Monday morning, the identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Authorities have stated that no further information is currently available, as the investigation remains in its early stages.
