RIDGEWOOD — The Village Council wants some advice about what to do with the horse barn at Irene Habernickel Family Park.
During its meeting on Wednesday, the council debated whether to renovate the building or replace it with a structure that would incorporate some of the barn’s elements.
Richard Brooks, the chairman of the village’s Parks and Recreation Board, told the council that while the barn is “in pretty bad shape at the moment, we shouldn’t jump to just tear it down.”
Architectural features of the stables inside the barn are unique, he said, and he suggested that the building could be transformed into classrooms or an arts cooperative with studio space.
He called for an engineering assessment to see whether the structure could withstand a renovation.

they should sell the whole place and let a developer build 10 luxury homes that would bring in lots of tax dollars.
I agree. The village never should have bought it.
Sell it to Valley.
Recuse!
I was up there the other day and what a great job the Parks Dept. has done with that property. It has taken some time but it really has come out great. There is active space (Ballfields) a playground, walking trails, and a pond. The house has been cleaned up and looks nice. There really is a little something for everyone and it still fits the neighborhood perfectly. It is such a nice facility and keeping with other parks/fields in town like Maple Park, Citizens and Lower Hawes that have athletic facilities but also natural wildscapes around them. Hopefully the Schedler property can be developed in a similar manner.
Why is it named after Irene? She didn’t donate it. The town paid market value. It was always ‘Huffmans Farm’ when I grew up. Name it “Hillcrest Farm’ or “Lost Revenue Farm’ or “Wasted dollar farm’, something appropriate.
