EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — A fiery four-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike brought traffic to a standstill on the afternoon of August 19, shutting down the highway for hours. Miraculously, no one was injured in the incident, which involved two commercial trucks, a car, and an ice cream truck.
According to the New Jersey State Police (NJSP), the crash happened just after 3:15 p.m. on the northbound western spur near milepost 112, close to Interchange 16W and Route 3.
What Happened on the NJ Turnpike?
State police said a tractor-trailer traveling north struck a construction barrier on the right side of the roadway. The impact caused the truck to collide with a Volvo bobtail truck in the center lane, which then hit a Mercedes car in the left lane, forcing it into another barrier.
Moments later, an ice cream truck in the right lane slammed into the tractor-trailer. Both the tractor-trailer and the ice cream truck burst into flames, with thick smoke billowing across the highway.
Massive Fire Response in East Rutherford
At 3:26 p.m., the East Rutherford Fire Department responded to the scene, with mutual aid companies from Rutherford, Carlstadt, and Wallington assisting in water supply operations. Additional coverage was provided by a Passaic engine and a Rutherford ladder truck to protect other areas during the emergency.
The fire was eventually contained, but the intense flames and resulting wreckage forced all lanes of the Turnpike’s western spur to remain closed for hours, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s 511NJ.com.
Investigation Underway
NJSP spokesperson Charles Marchan confirmed that the crash remains under investigation. Officials have not yet released details about possible citations or contributing factors.
