>so thats what all this bull about the “chairs was” …..
>I also heard that the police department had made no plans for covering the posted rain date. So it was either shoot them off on July 4 or not shoot them off at all.
Why publish a rain date if you have no intention of honoring it?
>truth is that 2 of the pd brass had vacation plans on rain date they were unwilling to change
>of course, if the PD had scheduled the manpower to cover the rain date, then Ridgewood Bloggers would be complaining that the PD spends too much $$$
>to 10:38. Your intelligence is well spoken by your opening comment. Unlike you (IMHO) you are probably someone who doesn’t plan or host a big 4rth party. No I’m not talking about a keg of beer with your few friends, rather a catered party involving several hundred if not thousands of dollars. The kinds of party you probably wish you were invited to. Many of these parties were cancelled and planned for the rain date. I assume since you can read the blog then you can read the posters and fliers. All gave a rain date. Now you may not be aware of this but a rain date usually means, if it rains then the event will be on the “RAIN DATE” (much like a sports event). On the fourth, we did indeed have a considerable amount of rain yet the event still went on much to the dismay of not only hosts of other parties but also for all the individuals, couples, parents, as well as children that did not venture out in the heavy downpour to see a display that may or may not occur. You may not understand the underlying “issue” and I certainly don’t fault you for it. You just may not have the intelligence for it. It’s okay, but before you embarrass yourself any further, you may want to take out your sentences that start with the ever intelligent, Rhodes scholar inspiring quote of “Whaaaaaa”
>BOE, Valley Hospital, Village Employees on the QT payroll, TERC math… oh, wait… lets complain about the fireworks… THEN, if things couldnt get any worse… why not lecture others because they dont understand the heavy stress of having a “catered affair.”
And to think that some people feel that Ridgewood is filled with self-important stuffed shirts…
>Talk about having your cake and eating it too! What chutzpah! Boo Hoo, your snooty “catered” party had to be moved and didn’t include fireworks. Same old undue sense of entitlement as always. Take a moment and think about the brave men and women in uniform who celebrated our nation’s birthday thousands of miles away protecting our way of life. They see fireworks every day, the kind that would make you soil your designer shorts. It’s a shame that money can’t buy you a clue. If you have so many complaints about the way the whole event was run, call the manager and demand answers…..
>Ridgewood’s reputation really does ring true. I am almost embarrassed to say I was born and raised in this town. Does the person who posted the comment at 12:09 realize how many people volunteer there time organizing the parade and fire works on the Fourth of July to give the residents a wonderful day. They begin there day at around 6:00 am and work all day long (giving up bbq’s with friends and family)and all you can think about is that your catered party might not be perfect. As far back as I can remember we have lucked out with good (dry) weather and Ridgewood has always put on a good show. So what if 1 year things didn’t go as planned. Get over yourself and realize we don’t live in a perfect world. I myself would rather be at a party that didn’t cost thousands of dollar. I enjoy sitting around the back yard eating burgers and celebrating the freedom we have in this country I don’t need caviar and champagne to do that. If you think you can do a better job next year you should forgo your thousand dollar party and volunteer your time. And yes I have volunteered for the 4th in past years and I appreciate all that they do.
>I read this blog every day but have to post (if that’s the correct term). I have a sneaky suspicion that 12:09 was just trying to get a rise out of a few of you. I have to admit I did smile at that one and kept smiling through the responses.
Don’t be embarrassed 7:27. Ridgewood was a great town, is a great town and will continue to be a great town.
>12:09, you have a valid point regardless of the egalitarians who resent your wealth.
It would be funny, if it weren’t so sad, how there are always a few who will defend the screw ups of our government no matter the circumstances.
No one is crying or whining, they are miffed that the town officals said one thing and did another.
7:27 maybe you could see this year’s abridged fireworks from your back yard as you sipped your Coors Lite. However, most families did not due to the rain and mistaken belief that our village officials would honor their word for a rain date.
>I am hoping that this was indeed a set up. As to 2:13am above? Who exactly is defending the screw-ups? I didnt notice that in any posts… maybe I’ve been blinded by my imported beer?
As to “resenting” anyone’s wealth? Where did you dig that up from? Stop patting yourself on the back and looking for friends. True colors, bleeding thru again.
6:08pm hit it on the head… There are Americans across the globe who celebrated July 4th in a very different way than we all did last week. Maybe you should think about that before you comment about “wealth envy.”
>Actually ..I planned and hosted a very large party which was catered. Spent a lot of money on it and had many many friends over which YOU probably wish you were invited to. (and yes, there was a keg of beer there) However, I also planned ahead and got a very large tent in case it rained. Which it did. This is called planning ahead. The weather is very unpredictable and we have to be aware of that. This way…the party will still go on no matter what the weather is like. So if your party was canclled then you are a sucky host who is afraid of melting because of a little rain. If you spent THOUSANDS on your party..then maybe you should have thought about getting a tent for your party so you can celebrate the 4th on the 4th. So..like I said before..WHAAAAAAAA!!!!!! Stop being a cry baby!!!!!!!!
>Back to the issue.
Does anyone know when a rain date becomes a “rain date”?
BTW, reading through this, somehow I think 9:58 is full of hot air.
>Why are you blaming the Police Department and the Village Manager- I was always under the impression that the Fire Chief is the one who calls the fireworks- if raining, windy or lightening? Why has noone mentioned him…..
>Agreed. 9:58 is full of hot air.
>Because, according to a letter published yesterday in the newspaper from the Committee, it was the Police who could not provide adquate coverage for the raindate. Everyone wanted to cancel but some of the higher ups at the Police Dep’t indicated that there would be inadequate police available for Saturday and it was Wednesday in the rain or nothings.
>I like to know what you bums are going to do when in 2010,is the year that will be no more fire works in town.so it is time to go to another town to look at .oooo.aaaaa.
>o well .
>The decision was made by all public safety with participation from the head of the Fourth of July Committee. There were several factors in play:
1) Several surrounding towns had their fireworks scheduled for Saturday and that would eliminate many of the off-duty, out-of-town police officers used at the Ridgewood celebration.
2) This would also eliminate several of the out-of-town EMS units used at the Ridgewood celebration.
While it was possible to have the fireworks on Saturday, a study of the real-time weather radar showed an opportunity to go with the fireworks and hopefully get them in before more rain. This was weighed against the limited resources available on Saturday and it was decided to go ahead.
All involved knew that it was a no-win situation and the decision was a result of many meetings and much discussion which included the Fourth of July Committee chair. If they went on Wednesday and it rained, people would be upset. If it went on Saturday and there was some sort of unexpected problem with public safety, people would be upset.
The bottom line is there was a fireworks show that lasted 23 minutes, which is about 7 minutes shorter than normal.
No one agency made the decision, it was done by committee with a lot of deliberation and the public’s best interest in mind.
>things do happen.but dont you wroy in a few years no more fire works.so you will be seening it on tv.can you say macys.
>Thanks, 10:18 pm. Your thoughts are rational and explain the decision-making process, which seems to have resulted in the right decision being made.
>Thanks 10:18, yours is the first rational response I have seen. But as 10:45am asked. When does a rain date occur? I would have never thought about any of this being an issue until I read it here. If the NY Yankees or any other team in the MLB:) have a rain date, I don’t think management is checking all of the schedules of their support staff.
10:35, on a fundamental basis, asks a pretty good question.
>sorry people the chief of police couldnt make the rain date thats why thry went ahead ,no other reason
>Enough with the fireworks. Stop scaring the wildlife! Isn’t the parade enough?!
>Enough with the fireworks. Stop scaring the wildlife! Isn’t the parade enough?!
you sound like an idiot
>Speaking of the parade, we need a new chairsperson..it’s lame and we’ve had enough of the same old same old. Did they steal the “heros” theme from the Wash. DC committee members? Where is Valley hospital’s float? a banner and 10 people walking, you’ve got to be kidding me. where are all of the floats from the businesses..shouldn’t they be giving back to the community?
SAD…
>How many more fire trucks can we fir in the Parade…Good God….how about something new!???
>The comment from 10:39 is obviously written by someone who has spent other people’s money all their career! “…where are all the floats from businesses..shouldn’t they be giving back to the community?”
Several things to point out here:
1) The parade could be “spruced up”
2) Businesses provide a service or product which you need or they wouldn’t stay in business.
3) Businesses pay property taxes just like you.
4) Businesses support hundreds of local ad journals, yearbooks, fund drives, etc from Rotary, Schools, Churches, Synagogues, Sports teams of every type, Nursery Schools, etc.
5) Business owners are involved in a variety of Ridgewood organizations including Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Masons, Knights of Columbus, Project Pride, public safety volunteers, etc
6) If the business owner is a Ridgewood resident (which many of them are), then they do all of this twice, once for the business and once on a personal level.
Where is your float? Since anyone can put in a float, we’ll watch for yours in next years parade. Be sure to label it so we can all recognize it!
>to the business owner..
maybe you should be more selective and prioritize where you spend your time and money, the most publicity you can get is the parade, versus the “rotary” club, what did you donate flowers? And by the way, I could take an additional 5 minutes and go out to the highway to get your “service” cheaper, but is the residents that keep you in business, remember that
>Hey – if you have good Parade ideas the Committee would welcome them with open arms! Send an email to info2007@ridgewoodjuly4th.org or even better come to a meeting – everyone is welcome. Meetings are the second Monday of every month (except August) at the Ridgewood Fire Headquarters classroom at 7:00 PM.
>so the next meeting is sept. if I read this correctly. great, see you there, would love to help and roll up my sleeves for the residents and businesses!!! is there a web site for this committee or a list of the committee members? how can you become a member?
>Sorry for the delay — yes our next meeting is in September. It is our anual meeting when officers are elected and committee assignments are made. It would be a great meeting for any new members to attend. I hope we see you there.
