The Clock is Ticking: TSA Confirms New Fee for Non-Compliant Flyers

Newark NJ, if you’re planning to fly domestically from Newark (EWR) or any other U.S. airport, you have a crucial deadline: February 1, 2026.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced on December 1, 2025, that travelers who fail to present a REAL ID-compliant license, passport, or other acceptable form of identification will no longer simply receive additional screening. Instead, they will be referred to a new, fee-based identity verification process.
This process, called TSA Confirm.ID, will allow travelers to verify their identity and fly, but it comes at a cost: a $45 fee that covers a 10-day travel period.
“This fee ensures the cost to cover verification of an insufficient ID will come from the traveler, not the taxpayer,” stated Adam Stahl, the TSA’s acting deputy administrator. “We urge all travelers to get a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID as soon as possible to avoid delays and potentially miss flights.”
The High Cost of Non-Compliance
While the TSA estimates that over 94% of passengers already use a compliant ID, the remaining 6%—including New Jerseyans still using a standard license without the gold star—need to act quickly.
-
The Fee: $45 to use TSA Confirm.ID for a 10-day travel period. The fee is payable ideally online before you arrive at the airport, though on-site payment options will be available.
-
The Delay: Travelers using Confirm.ID should expect delays at the security checkpoint, which could lead to missed flights.
-
The Risk: Access is not guaranteed. If the TSA cannot confirm your identity through the alternative process, you will be denied entry to the secure area.
Passport or Gold Star: What ID Does TSA Accept?
If your New Jersey driver’s license does not have a small gold star in the upper right corner, it is not REAL ID compliant. You will need one of the following alternatives to fly domestically starting February 1, 2026:
| Acceptable Forms of ID (TSA Approved) | Why It Works |
| REAL ID-compliant Driver’s License/ID | Features the gold star ⭐️. |
| U.S. Passport (Book or Card) | Federally issued travel document. |
| DHS Trusted Traveler Cards | Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST cards. |
| U.S. Department of Defense ID | Including IDs issued to dependents. |
| Permanent Resident Card | Proof of legal resident status. |
| Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) | Approved federal government ID. |
If you have a valid U.S. Passport or one of the other items listed, you do not need to worry about the $45 fee.
Your NJ REAL ID Action Plan: The 2 + 1 + 6 Formula
If you typically use your NJ driver’s license for domestic travel, you must upgrade it to a REAL ID.
The upgrade process is managed by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and requires an in-person appointment. You must adhere to the 2 + 1 + 6 = REAL ID document formula:
-
Appointment Required: Make an appointment online through the NJ MVC website.
-
Bring 2 Proofs of Address: Documents must show your name and current address. Examples include a utility bill (within 90 days), bank statement (within 60 days), or property tax bill.
-
Bring 1 Proof of SSN: Your Social Security Card, a W-2 form from the past year, or a pay stub with your full SSN.
-
Bring Identity Documents Totalling 6 Points:
-
Primary Documents (4 points each): Unexpired U.S. Passport, U.S. Birth Certificate (certified copy), Certificate of Naturalization.
-
Secondary Documents (Varying Points): NJ driver’s license (if not primary), Social Security card (if not used for SSN proof), health insurance card, etc.
-
Pro-Tip: Check the NJ MVC website’s “Document Selector” tool before your appointment to ensure you have the correct combination of original or certified documents.
