Ridgewood NJ, if you’ve been walking around Jersey City recently, you might have noticed something unusual—six-wheeled, self-driving food delivery robots roaming the streets. These roving coolers, complete with antennas and programmable faces, have become the talk of the town, sparking a mix of excitement and skepticism on social media. With dozens of comments on platforms like Reddit, opinions range from “Cool!” to “No, thanks,” with many questioning how long it will take before one of these robots gets stolen.

So, what exactly are these robots? They are part of an innovative food delivery service by Avride, designed to bring food from local restaurants and grocery stores directly to customers. Using advanced software and cameras, these bots navigate city streets, crosswalks, and avoid obstacles, all while keeping your privacy intact—Avride promises that their cameras blur faces and license plates to ensure discretion. Each robot can carry up to six 16.5-inch pizzas and three 1.5-liter bottles, making them versatile for a variety of deliveries.

Currently, these robots are in Jersey City to map out their future delivery zones. Once this mapping is complete, they’ll be taken off the streets for a short period before returning to begin deliveries in earnest. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop addressed the robots’ presence on social media, noting that the city is still deciding how to best utilize this new technology. While New York City has banned similar robots, Fulop expressed interest in exploring regulations rather than outright banning them, highlighting the city’s history of embracing new technology.

But how will Jersey City residents react to these new high-tech delivery bots? It’s too soon to say. While some cities, like Los Angeles, have integrated automated delivery robots into their daily lives, others have pushed back. For instance, New York City demanded that FedEx remove its delivery bots from the streets in 2019 due to concerns about safety and traffic congestion.

The future of food delivery robots in Jersey City remains uncertain. However, with automated services like Uber Eats and Starship Technologies already deploying thousands of delivery robots across the U.S., and colleges like The College of New Jersey using similar technology on campus, it seems likely that these robots are here to stay. Whether they become a beloved part of the local landscape or a controversial nuisance will depend on how the city and its residents adapt to this technological innovation.

  1. Can you turn them upside down like a turtle?

  2. What makes me think these will not be used in certain areas?

  3. Cars and bicycles will hit them, dogs will bark them, and people will trip on them.

  4. They won’t be use at Glen Rock basketball courts…..
