Foxborough, MA ,a Field Goal Attempt Gone Wrong in Gillette Stadium New York Giants fans were left stunned—and social media exploded—during their Monday night game against the New England Patriots after kicker Younghoe Koo, a product of Ridgewood High School, NJ, had one of the most bizarre field goal attempts in recent NFL memory.
Trailing 17-7 in the second quarter, the Giants desperately needed to convert a 46-yard field goal to narrow the score to a one-possession game. The field goal unit trotted out, but the snap was quickly overshadowed by an embarrassing special teams mishap.
The Turf Monster Strikes
As Koo began his approach to kick the football, his right cleat got badly caught in the Gillette Stadium turf.
-
The Flub: Koo’s forward momentum halted instantly. He was unable to complete his follow-through and, astonishingly, never even made contact with the football.
-
The Aftermath: Holder Jamie Gillan was left kneeling with the ball, defenseless, as Patriots defenders swarmed him, tackling him for a 13-yard “sack” (loss of yards) and forcing a turnover on downs. The Giants, instead of closing the gap, left the field with zero points and lost possession.
A Viral Moment for the Wrong Reasons
The stunning blunder immediately went viral, leading to mockery across social media and disbelief among commentators. While the mishap spared Koo an official “missed field goal” on his stat sheet (it was recorded as a sack on the holder), the play captured the frustration of the Giants’ night, which ended in a 33-15 defeat.
The unfortunate play is a rare blot on the career of Koo, who has generally been regarded as one of the league’s most reliable kickers, earning a Pro Bowl nod earlier in his career. The moment highlighted the difficulty and precision required of an NFL kicker, and the sudden power of a “turf monster.”
New Jersey’s NFL Kicking Legacy
For fans in Bergen County, the moment was particularly painful as Koo remains a celebrated local athlete. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Koo played for Ridgewood High School before becoming a star at Georgia Southern. Despite this recent flub while with the Giants, New Jersey fans continue to root for the Ridgewood alum to regain his consistent Pro Bowl form.

Give the guy a break
If u feel the need to shame someone, look no further than the defense.
Five ways to fix the NFL..
1) No more than 12 forward passes per team each game.
2) One national anthem.
3) No celebrations in the opponent’s backfield.
4) Automatic removal of any player that commits 2 penalties in a game.
5) No more kicking extra points, all point after attempts are 2-point tries from the 2.5 yard line.
Hang in there kid. Your home town will always cheer for you!
see turf fields suck
Haha – nice title. Blame the tool, not the operator for the worst kick in NFL history…
Anyone who has ever competed in a serious way has experienced at least one embarrassing failure. Sadly, Koo’s was on MNF before a national audience. But he didnt get where he is by being easily discouraged. Hang in there kid.
Exactly the turf looks great, but it’s so expensive to purchase it have it installed maintain it, every 8 to 10 years. I gotta replace it. Yes it’s adorable but the problem is it’s so damn hot. There is a big difference in temperature from grass, sod fields, too turf,
