From Rebel Roots to ‘Wyckoff’: A Quick Look at 100 Years of History
While the area was settled centuries ago, Wyckoff as an independent municipality was born out of political rebellion.
Originally part of Franklin Township—established by Royal Charter in 1771 and named after Governor William Franklin (the son of Benjamin Franklin)—the town underwent a major shift in 1926. Because Governor Franklin famously broke ties with his revolutionary father to remain a British Loyalist, local voters decided they wanted a clean slate.
On November 2, 1926, residents officially voted to break away and change the municipality’s name to Wyckoff.
Did You Know? The true origin of the name “Wyckoff” is still a fun local debate. Some historians trace it back to a native Lenape word meaning “high ground” or “water,” while others attribute it to the Dutch surnames of early European settlers.
