RIDGEWOOD, NJ – Great news for local environmental advocates! Green Ridgewood is thrilled to announce the completion of a major capstone project by a team of graduate students from Columbia University’s M.S. in Sustainability Management program. The comprehensive report offers a bold vision for the future of the beloved Saddle River County Park, focusing on resilience and sustainability.
The report, titled “Reimagining Bergen County’s Saddle River County Park: Transforming a Suburban Oasis into a Model of Sustainability,” tackles critical challenges facing the park, including the increasing threats posed by climate change, recurrent flooding, and evolving community needs.
A Roadmap for Climate Resilience
Saddle River County Park is a vital green artery for Bergen County, offering miles of trails and natural beauty. However, like many riparian parks, it is highly vulnerable to environmental shifts.
Working closely with local stakeholders and community leaders, the Columbia graduate students conducted an in-depth assessment to propose innovative, actionable solutions designed to:
- Enhance Climate Resilience: Strategies to protect park infrastructure and ecosystems from extreme weather events, particularly flooding along the Saddle River.
- Improve Ecological Health: Proposals for boosting biodiversity, managing invasive species, and ensuring the long-term vitality of the park’s natural habitats.
- Boost Community Enjoyment: Recommendations for upgrades and features that will allow the community to continue utilizing and appreciating this local treasure for generations.

Sorry but I don’t trust anything coming from Columbia U.
Liberalism is a serious mental disorder.
Saddle River County Park is located in a flood zone.
The first hint might be the word “River” in the name of the park.
The biggest threat to the park is piss poor maintenance.
There is no way that anyone should trust anything coming from these Columbia leftists. One can guarantee that this will be biased, very expensive, and of minor real significance. Swales?? Plantings?? It’s ridiculous when you consider the fact that MILLIONS if not BILLIONS, of gallons of water are running down the river like a freight train!! The park is in a floodplain, just like the high school field, and nothing we can do (or imagine) will ever resolve it. In the future, mitigate the best you can when repairs or upgrades take place, or in the case of the high school, move it to the old Valley Hospital site. Otherwise, we have to live with it. Period.
