Ridgewood NJ, Monday marked a significant moment for the space industry as a US company successfully launched a lunar lander on a mission to the moon. However the company said it is abandoning an attempt to put its Peregrine spacecraft on the moon less than 24 hours after the vehicle took flight. According to the company , the spacecraft has suffered “critical” propellant loss from a fuel leak.
If the Peregrine lander from Astrobotic would have completed its journey , it would have been a historic event, making it the first American spacecraft to touch down on the lunar surface in over 50 years. This achievement is a crucial milestone in NASA’s ongoing efforts to return humans to the moon and engage in low-gravity activities such as golf.
However, not everyone was in favor of the launch. The Navajo Nation, the largest Native American tribe in the US, expressed a desire to delay the mission. Their concern stems from the fact that the spacecraft is carrying cremated human remains, which are intended to be deposited on the moon. The moon holds sacred significance for the Navajo and other Indigenous tribes.
In response, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren stated, “The placement of human remains on the moon is a profound desecration of this celestial body revered by our people.”
To address these concerns, the White House held a last-minute meeting with Navajo Nation representatives, acknowledging their perspectives. However, the government clarified that it cannot dictate the cargo carried by a private company to the moon.
The CEO of Celestis, the company responsible for the memorial spaceflight, defended the mission, asserting, “No individual religion can or should dictate whether a space mission should be approved.”
Looking to the future, NASA acknowledged that its increased reliance on the private sector for space missions may lead to more contentious situations surrounding lunar missions.
