RIDGEWOOD – Village police arrested a 27-year-old Paterson man and charged him with receiving stolen property after he and a coworker found a missing toddler walking on Maple Avenue and the two men stopped to make sure the child was safe, authorities said Tuesday.

Police said the chain of events started on Saturday, when police received a report of a 4-year-old boy walking without an adult nearby.

When patrol officers arrived at the scene, police said, they found the boy with two sanitation company employees, who then turned the child over to the officers.

Police said the officers determined that the child had left home without the knowledge of his caregiver, and they returned him back to his home safely.

Later that evening, police said, one of the two men, identified as Michael T. Jordan, returned to the child’s home looking for a reward. Jordan also returned the caregiver’s wallet to her, but items were missing, police said. The authorities did not say how Jordan had obtained the wallet.

  1. It’s a little vague for me…does Jordan work for the town as a sanitation worker…?

  2. This just goes to show that 99% of the people out there will help a child in need. Even a sleazeball thief will help a wandering child. We act as if every interaction with a stranger is a danger to our kids but in reality almost every stranger will help a kid in need. Just watch your wallet when retrieving said child…

  3. #1 that’s what I was trying to figure out too. These writers are terrible.

  4. How did he get the wallet? I know that he found the child.

  5. Having read the story, I can only assume that he went to the kids house looking for a reward, was invited inside, and stole it there. It’s not clear, but I can’t think of any other way. I see that the charge is receiving stolen goods, which is probably due to him being found in possession of it, but with no actual proof, and no admission, that he was the one who stole it.

  6. Rsp, this was a village employee?

  7. Cliffviewpilot.com has a much better article. It says they are Paterson sanitation workers who claimed the child was carrying the wallet when they found him, and that when they returned the wallet to grandma later for a reward, she called police. Allegedly.

  8. #7 – okay, that makes a little more sense.

    A stupid crime.
Michael Jordan doesn’t need the money.

  9. Not sure a crime took place. Caregiver must be mortified or feeling “showed up” and may be lashing out at the men, who could be blameless for all we know. It’s hard to believe someone would bear false witness against their neighbor just to deflect attention from their own questionable behavior but perhaps we are only seeing a local reflection of a circus act a certain holder of high office has been busy developing into a high art for the better part of a decade.

  10. If I was on the Grand Jury I don’t think I would bite on this one…

  11. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.
