Google said Friday it will lay off 12,000 people from its workforce, adding to the slew of major U.S. tech companies cutting jobs amid fears of an oncoming recession. CEO Sundar Pichai announced the layoffs yesterday in an email to staff, which would account for about 6% of the company.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and parent company Alphabet, said in an email sent to the company’s staff Friday that the firm will begin making layoffs in the U.S. immediately. In other countries, the process “will take longer due to local laws and practices,” he said. CNBC reported in November that Google employees had been fearing layoffs as its counterparts made cuts and as employees saw changes to the company’s performance ratings system.

The perks of working at a Silicon Valley firm are disappearing and unlikely to return. The current macroeconomic environment is forcing tech companies to optimize more for profit than growth. There were over 150,000 job cuts in 2022 and more are set for this year. The past few decades had managers fighting for talent, but now they are taking back control from employees. Despite this change, almost 80% of recently laid-off workers have been able to find employment within three months of being let go.

  2. Following in the footsteps of Elon, where he got rid of many employees who were effectively doing no work, or if it was work, it consisted of blocking any user who didn’t follow the liberal guidebook.

    1. Correct.
However, Musk was vilified, since he he now an Enemy of the Left for ACTUALLY supporting Free Speech.

Google, Meta and the like will be given a pass, since they are still in the fold.

    2. A lot of these employees are going to find out that, despite their feelings of entitlement, they are low value and expendable.

They will also learn the valuable lesson, that except for a few other people, nobody gives a damn about them.

These are things they should have learned years ago, before they were taught self-esteem…………………….

  3. Hmm…coincides with the Economic Forum in Davos.

More dependence on the State with all of these dismissals by Big Tech.
