Ridgewood NJ, New Jerseyans in the northwestern region are urged to prepare immediately. Governor Phil Murphy has declared a State of Emergency for five counties in the state, effective Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 5:00 a.m. EST.

This declaration, issued under Executive Order No. 406, is a proactive measure due to a potentially significant winter storm expected to bring hazardous conditions, including heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain, making travel dangerous and challenging.

The State of Emergency applies to the following five counties:

  • Hunterdon County

  • Morris County

  • Passaic County

  • Sussex County

  • Warren County

“With snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain expected to impact travel and safety on our roads, I am declaring a State of Emergency for Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren Counties. I urge all drivers in these areas to exercise caution, remain alert, and follow all safety protocols.” – Governor Phil Murphy

What the State of Emergency Means for You

A State of Emergency allows state resources to be mobilized quickly and permits state agencies, like the Department of Transportation (NJDOT), to take necessary actions to ensure public safety.

NJDOT crews and contractors are already being activated and positioned overnight to be ready to address the weather conditions as soon as they arrive. This preparation is critical for keeping major roadways navigable and safe.

Key Safety Guidance:

  1. Avoid Non-Essential Travel: If you are in the affected counties, limit travel, especially during the storm’s peak hours.

  2. Exercise Extreme Caution: If travel is necessary, drive slowly, increase following distance, and ensure your vehicle is prepared for winter conditions.

  3. Stay Informed: Monitor local forecasts, warnings, and official watches.

The Executive Order will remain in effect until the emergency conditions have passed and the order is formally lifted.
