Ridgewood NJ, Duh? Couldn’t someone at Village Hall and/or The Stable have figured out how to have capitalized on this heat wave? The “not enough lifeguards” excuse is just kind of lame.
Late Season – Monday, August 17 to Sunday, August 30th
Weekends, 10 am to 7:30 pm
Weekdays, 12 noon to 7:30 pm
POOL CLOSED – Monday, August 31 through Friday, September 4
Labor Day Weekend – Saturday, Sept 5 through Monday, Sept 7
Daily, 10 am to 7:30 pm
Day Camp is over and all the camp leaders are not available could be one reason and very few adults are busy now with their Fall preparations at home etc.
Pool season end close up crews anxious to get that job done.
Greydon is dying. I went by there Sunday around 11 AM. It was 90 degrees and sunny, and maybe there were 20 people at Graydon and half of them were in the water, which is disgusting by this time of year.
We can either modernize it, or turn it into a duck pond / storm basin.
You know why people from Paramus / Glen Rock don’t come to Greydon? They have better facilities.
The reduced hours are fine and reflect reduce usage. It is used more when camp is in session and those families who have to purchase badges for camp often stay. Camp is over and it is empty.
It is “empty” because a 12 noon start time is not good for parents of children who are up early and ready to nap by 1 PM. Check out Glen Rock’s hours:

Graydon is a wonderful facility. Poor/incompetent management is the facility’s major problem.
Wasn’t there an instance many years ago in which Graydon either opened a week early, or closed a week later due to a major heat wave? Now, the management just doesn’t seem to give a damn about satisfying the public. By the way, what ever happen to the Wibit?
The Lifeguard issue is very real. Since the drowning, lifeguard standards have been increased, making it harder to get enough, especially when a lot of the young lifeguards are off taking family vacations, etc. These aren’t the lifeguards of old, where any kid who could swim a few lengths and wanted to get a suntan while looking at the girls could get a job.
sorry you always had to pass the life saving test issued by the Red Cross , even in the stone age 1970’s
Not sure what Graydon you are going to, 9:28. I have been there three times this week and there were plenty of patrons, including at 7:20 one evening.
Good question 11:56. What did happen to the Wibit? It was supposed to be the be all and end all.
@11:52 are you actually comparing Graydon to Glen Rock pool? Of course they would have longer hours, they have many more patrons and can pay more. They are also open every weekend through September and have been for as long as I can remember. I have no doubt that you and perhaps a few of your friends would like to go in the morning and are being inconvenienced but that number of people is not nearly enough to necessatate the longer hours. Go after naps and have dinner!
I love Graydon; have been going for many years; Wibit is too large’ crowds out swimming room. Since you can no longer swim past ropes; the swimming area is too small now in deep end. It used to be fun swimming from one area to another.
In Allendale you can still cross sections.
Graydon should have swimmers and guests sign swimming level when they first come in and have green dot on badge to show permission to swim in deep area and cross over to other sections.
Wibit has modified its froggy plastic ambitions and will now be merely the end all.
All pools have to manage the schedules of young lifeguards. This is not unique to Ridgewood. Have other towns cut hours or os ot just a Ridgewood problem?
Who is the person from Parks n Rec responsible for staffing? Someone has some ‘explaining to do.
Here is an article from two years ago referencing the Wibit not being setup and why. I don’t know if the same reasons still apply.

In a cement bottom pool, I don’t think there is a need to have SCUBA qualified guards.
My guess is you have more of the high school students as guards.
I would prefer to have Graydon open earlier and longer. If/when our more qualified guards start heading back to school, the talent pool is more limited by the additional qualifications needed to guard at Graydon.
The cement pools also have guards heading back to school, but with the lesser requirements needed they can back fill easier.
Why did it happen this year. We have had the sandy bottom pool for decades.
School is starting earlier.
Excuses, excuses, excuses; nothing but lame excuses. The lifeguard issue could be easily resolved if management wanted it resolved. Memorial Pool in Fair Lawn is a sand bottom pool – same issue with lifeguard training & staffing. Look at their posted hours of operation:
Open Thursday, June 25 to Monday, September 7, 2014
10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (7 Days a Week) (weather permitting)
NOTE: The Pool will be temporarily closed from Monday, August 31 to Friday, September 4
Crestwood Lake in Allendale, also a sand bottom. Open 1/2 hour longer than Graydon.
