Tragedy in Hackensack: Authorities Seek Public’s Help Following Fatal Overnight Hit-and-Run

Hackensack NJ, A quiet night in Bergen County turned tragic early Friday morning when a pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run collision. Local authorities are now calling on the community for information to help identify the driver who fled the scene.

The Incident at Essex and Summit

On Friday, May 8, 2026, at approximately 12:49 a.m., the Hackensack Police Department responded to an emergency call at the intersection of Essex Street and Summit Avenue. Officers arrived to find an adult male suffering from critical injuries.

Preliminary findings indicate the victim was struck by a motor vehicle that failed to stop, leaving the scene immediately after the impact. The victim was rushed to HMH Hackensack University Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Active Joint Investigation Underway

The investigation is a coordinated effort led by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, under the direction of Chief Jeff Angermeyer, and the Hackensack Police Department, led by Chief Michael Antista.

Accident investigators from the Bergen County Fatal Accident Task Force were also deployed to the scene to process evidence and reconstruct the circumstances of the crash. As of now, details regarding the suspect vehicle or the identity of the victim have not been released pending further investigation and family notification.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has surveillance footage from the area of Essex Street and Summit Avenue around 1:00 a.m. to come forward.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella stated that more details will be released as they become available.
