Tenafly NJ, in a harrowing development, Palestinian militant group Hamas has released a video of Edan Alexander, a 20-year-old Israeli-American from Tenafly, New Jersey, pleading for help to secure his release. The video, published Saturday, has heightened calls for urgent action to free hostages still held in Gaza.
A Plea for Freedom
In the 3 1/2-minute video, Alexander appears visibly distressed, seated against a dimly lit wall. Addressing his family, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Alexander appeals for intervention.
His mother, Yael Alexander, expressed heartbreak after seeing the video. Speaking at a rally in Tel Aviv, she said, “The video gives us hope, but it also shows how much Edan and the other hostages are suffering. We are praying for their rescue.”
Yael called on Israel’s leadership to seek a ceasefire and negotiate a deal with Hamas to secure the release of all hostages. “My dear, beloved Edan, we miss you painfully,” she said, urging Israeli leaders to prioritize the hostages’ safe return.
Government Response and Public Pressure
Prime Minister Netanyahu condemned the video as psychological warfare but reassured the Alexander family that Israel was doing everything possible to bring the hostages home.
Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy joined the chorus of support for Edan’s family. On social media, Murphy urged both the current Biden administration and the incoming Trump administration to facilitate a swift agreement to secure the hostage’s release.
The Hostages Families Forum also pressed both administrations to ramp up efforts, warning that “the hostages’ lives hang by a thread.”
Ceasefire Talks and International Efforts
Hamas leaders are set to meet with Egyptian officials in Cairo to discuss potential ceasefire terms. A deal could involve the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The U.S. has reportedly revived efforts to mediate such an agreement, signaling renewed urgency in the international community.
With approximately half of the 101 hostages believed to be alive, the stakes could not be higher.
A Community’s Hope for Edan’s Return
As Tenafly and the global community rally behind the Alexanders, the family’s message remains clear: “Stay strong, Edan. Survive.” The world watches as the efforts to free him and others held in Gaza unfold in this delicate and critical moment.
