Ridgewood NJ, Planning your travel for America’s historic 250th Independence Day weekend? NJ TRANSIT has announced extensive service modifications to help you beat the crowds, along with strict security policies you need to know before you board.

Whether you are heading to the Jersey City fireworks, catching an early getaway, or prepping for the World Cup match traffic on Sunday, here is your ultimate transit survival guide for July 2 through July 5, 2026.

🚨 CRITICAL SAFETY UPDATE FOR JULY 4TH: Beverages of any kind, in any type of container (open or closed), are strictly prohibited on all NJ TRANSIT trains, buses, and light rail lines on Saturday, July 4th. This policy will be strictly enforced, and commuters will notice an increased police presence statewide.


Thursday, July 2: “Early Getaway” Enhancements

To help you kickstart the holiday weekend, NJ TRANSIT is running a regular weekday schedule beefed up with afternoon extras:

  • Rail: Extra outbound trains will depart from Penn Station New York, Newark Penn Station, and Hoboken Terminal between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Note: To accommodate these, select regular trains on the Main/Bergen County/Port Jervis, Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, and Raritan Valley Lines will be cancelled.

  • Bus: Extra buses will roll out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) on more than two dozen routes starting around noon.

  • Light Rail: Newark Light Rail, River LINE, and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) will operate on regular weekday schedules.

Friday, July 3: Pre-Holiday Schedules

  • Rail: Trains will run on a weekend/major holiday schedule. (Train 88 will depart Port Jervis at 4:05 PM).

  • Bus: Most North and Central NJ routes will follow a Saturday schedule, while South NJ routes will run on a Sunday schedule.

  • Light Rail: Newark Light Rail will run on a Saturday schedule. River LINE and HBLR will follow regular weekday schedules.

Independence Day — Saturday, July 4: Major Jersey City Diverts

Expect regular weekend schedules across the board, but pay close attention to local holiday traffic and major light rail shutdowns:

  • Buses: Subject to detours and service delays due to local 4th of July parades and community events.

  • HBLR Suspension (Jersey City Fireworks): Light rail service will be temporarily suspended between Liberty State Park and Newport Station starting at 5:00 AM due to festivities.

    • Trains from 8th Street/West Side Ave will terminate at Liberty State Park.

    • Trains from Tonnelle Ave/Hoboken Terminal will terminate at Newport Station.

    • Pro-Tip: If you are traveling from Hoboken or Newport to Exchange Place, use the PATH train instead. Avoid Exchange Place entirely if you aren’t attending the festival.

Sunday, July 5: World Cup Match Day

Be prepared for an influx of traffic and specialized travel patterns. Sunday, July 5, is an official World Cup match day in the region. Check the NJ TRANSIT app directly for specific stadium and routing adjustments.
