Heroic Rescue in West Milford: New Jersey State Police Save Injured Cliff Diver

West Milford NJ, in a dramatic display of courage and skill, the New Jersey State Police Aviation North Unit, alongside the T.E.A.M.S. North Unit, carried out a daring rescue operation on August 28, 2024. The mission took place in the rugged terrains of West Milford, where a cliff-diving incident left one individual critically injured and stranded in a remote, hard-to-reach location.

This was far from a routine rescue. The victim’s location, coupled with challenging weather conditions, required an immediate and sophisticated response. Stepping up to the challenge was an elite team of state police, including pilots Tpr. I. Keith Pronko and SFC. Sam Mantle, Ridgewood’s own Sgt. Evan Curtiss (who was at onetime with Ridgewood EMS)  as the hoist operator, and rescuers Tpr. Domenick Cagnole and Tpr. Juan Giglio.

The crew faced significant obstacles, including adverse weather and treacherous cliffs, as they executed a high-risk extraction. Hovering above the steep terrain, the team used a hoist to safely retrieve the injured party—a maneuver that required precision and nerves of steel.

The injured individual was successfully transported to Morristown Trauma Center, where they are receiving treatment for their injuries. While details of the victim’s condition remain undisclosed, the successful rescue has been widely praised as a critical and life-saving intervention.

This operation serves as a testament to the rigorous training and teamwork of the New Jersey State Police, whose quick and decisive actions ensured that a perilous situation did not end in tragedy.
