Teaneck NJ, an off-duty Bergen County firefighter is being celebrated for his quick and heroic actions that saved a child trapped in frigid water earlier this week.

Captain Christopher Connolly of the Teaneck Fire Department was walking to his daughter’s school on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, when he heard the alarming sound of someone falling through ice. Acting immediately, Connolly spotted a child nearly submerged in icy water, clinging desperately to the ice as friends struggled to pull them to safety.

Quick Action Saves the Day

Without hesitation, Captain Connolly assessed the situation to ensure no other victims were in danger. He swiftly rescued the child from the water and called 911, providing first aid until emergency personnel arrived.

“Chief Joseph Berchtold and the department are proud of Captain Connolly for his quick actions in helping this child,” read a post from the Teaneck Fire Department on Facebook.

Teaneck Battalion Chief Paul O’Connor confirmed that the rescue occurred at a creek in Bergen County but declined to provide details about the child’s age or condition, citing privacy concerns.

A Hero on and off Duty

This life-saving act comes just days after Captain Connolly was officially promoted from lieutenant to captain during a January 15, 2025, ceremony recognizing him and eight other Teaneck firefighters for their career achievements.

Captain Connolly’s bravery underscores the dedication and readiness of first responders, even when off duty. His actions serve as a reminder of the selflessness and courage that firefighters bring to their communities every day.

Community Gratitude and Praise

Local residents and officials have expressed gratitude for Connolly’s life-saving efforts. Stories like his highlight the critical role firefighters play in ensuring public safety, both in uniform and as everyday heroes.
