West New York, NJ, A massive international dark web investigation has culminated in a lengthy federal prison sentence for a Hudson County man who methodically targeted and exploited hundreds of children online.

Julio Nunez, 29, of West New York, New Jersey, was sentenced to 320 months (more than 26 years) in federal prison, followed by 15 years of strict supervised release. The high-profile sentence was handed down in Newark federal court by U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin.

The Catfishing Scheme: Posing as a Woman Online

According to federal court documents, Nunez ran a highly calculated, multi-year operation spanning from 2020 through 2024. Posing as a woman online, Nunez successfully manipulated and enticed hundreds of young boys into sending him illicit explicit media, known legally as child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Federal prosecutors revealed that Nunez was a relentless serial predator, repeatedly targeting many of the same children year after year to continually solicit content.

A Grotesque Moniker: ‘The Artist’ Watermark

What shocked investigators most was the defendant’s brazen arrogance. Nunez did not just harvest this illicit material for private use; he actively profited from it, distributing and trading the files online.

“He wanted the world to know that it was he—‘The Artist,’ as he grotesquely styled himself—who created the CSAM,” federal officials stated.

Nunez went so far as to digitally watermark the images and videos with his chosen moniker, using it as a digital signature to communicate with other online abusers.

A Global Dominated Takedown

Nunez’s arrest has triggered a massive domino effect across global law enforcement agencies. Since seizing his electronics, the FBI has identified his watermarked content on devices belonging to numerous other predators. This single New Jersey investigation has already led to subsequent arrests and active prosecutions of child exploiters across the United States and worldwide.

“This sentence demonstrates the FBI’s unwavering commitment to seeking justice,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy. “The fact that the subject was brazen enough to watermark his victims’ images highlights the importance of getting this predator off the street as the utmost priority.”

The case was spearheaded by the FBI’s Child Exploitation Operational Unit alongside the Project Safe Childhood initiative, a national Department of Justice coalition dedicated to locating online predators and rescuing victims.
