Ridgewood NJ, we’ve received several reports during over the past few weeks about a security guard being stationed nightly on the top floor of the Hudson Street Parking garage. One of the individuals who contacted us said the security guard claimed the Village was paying for the service, which is said to be in place from 7PM until 1AM every day of the week. Adult residents taking photos of the moon, comets, and the Northern Lights from the 4th floor have reported being asked to leave by the security guard.
We wonder what incidents, other than an occasional photo shoot, lead to the need for nightly security above and beyond regular patrols by Ridgewood Police Department officers. We especially wonder how much this added security is costing taxpayers, particularly since the garage itself seems rather empty (except Saturday night), and produces virtually no revenue during the hours of 7PM through 1AM (paid parking ends at 8PM M-F, 6PM on Saturday, and is free all day on Sundays).
Does anyone recall there being a public outcry for improved security at the garage, or any public discussion about hiring a nighttime security guard? Is the guard unarmed or armed? And aren’t there closed-circuit television cameras in place throughout the facility? Seems like overkill to us.

The jokes write themselves…
The money pit that keeps on suckers no longer s dry
They’ll pay the guard with bags of quarters……………………
Install a camera and have it monitored at the police desk.
There are cameras and they are monitored.
If monitored cameras are in place why not just send an officer as needed ?
Good question. Need cameras with speakers and microphones though.
The gift from the Aronsohn regime that keeps on giving.
This garage was a Knudsen decision.
It started with Aronsohn.
Now Children !!!
Nope. Knudsen did what she could to downsize it. Aronsonh pushed forward the with the larger version . I believe the referendum for the garage was under aronson
Install an attractive fence or rail along the top perimeter of the building and be done with it. Oh, that’s right; you can’t install a fence or rail because the incompetent architect you hired designed walls that can’t support the weight of any fencing or railing without compromising the entire structure. Taxpayers get screwed again.
Wow! Have we considered suing the architect?
That’s bullshit they can put a gate. A swinging gate fence does not weigh a lot. If it can’t support that, then the whole structure should be taken down. Who is overseeing this construction job?
They are unable to drill holes in the masonry block perimeter along the top because water would enter the holes and compromise the entire structure. That is why they cannot put up a fence or a rail.
they dont have any lexall caulk?
We have to thank former mayor Knudsen and other brave residents who fought for a smaller garage. Garage is a troubling sign of what could come with this super majority Village Council.
Teenagers hang out up there at night. Cost and historical drama aside, deterring teenage hangouts is probably a good thing.
Pretty sure it’s only on weekends. Just spoke to an officer in town about it. Since the garage opened there have been a lot of incidents of kids throwing things off of the roof and hitting people and property. I’d rather pay for a security guard than have to have a cop sitting there all night.
The security guard was there on a weeknight when I drove up to verify the rumor.
Wow, a lot of time on your hands. How about volunteering somewhere?
If the garage had been designed properly, a perimeter fence would have been put in place to prevent such incidents.
A recurring expense which could have been avoided if the garage was designed with function in mind instead of appearance as a primary attribute.
Appearance? It looks like a prison.
What a magnificent piece of scrap. Is it making any money yet
Teenagers.
They make gates that are freestanding
Orange cones and a sign that says closed after 6pm
If our little mayor did not own the building right below the garage there would be no guard. Have to protect your ASSets.
There’s more to a story than you know they are afraid of lawsuits someone jumping off so on, I blame the individuals that were looking over the blueprints before they approved everything, it’s amazing. The people that were in charge how quickly they backpedal and they walk away like a little mouse, they are pieces of shit.
